Sharks embrace first month of 2009

Rewind the Tape:

1.30.09 - Worcester 3 - Springfield 1 - DCU Center

The Sharks got goals from Steven Zalewski, Lukas Kaspar, and Riley Armstrong in a 3-1 victory over the Falcons on Friday in a physical contest that featured four fights. Matt Jones picked up his first professional fighting major and added an assist . Worcester outshot the Falcons 34-17 as Thomas Griess picked up the victory in net.

1.31.09 - Worcester 5 - San Antonio 1 - DCU Center

Cory Larose extended his point streak to nine games with two goals and Taylor Dakers notched his 9th win of the season making 26 saves with a win over San Antonio on Saturday night. Jamie McGinn scored his 12th and Andrew Desjardins recorded his 5th of the season and 1st in nine games at 19:59 of the first period to give the Sharks a 3-0 lead after 20 minutes. Brad Staubitz had two assists in the first period and Brendan Buckley was voted the #1 star for the Sharks.

2.1.09 - Worcester 1 - Providence 2 - Dunkin Donuts Center

With first place on the line, the Providence Bruins got two goals from Mikko Lehtonen and held off a late Sharks attack in the third period to preserve the victory. Steven Zalewski scored in his third straight game with Thomas Greiss pulled late in the third period as he was set up by Ryan Vesce. The assist for Vesce extended his point streak to 14 games. The Sharks outshot the Bruins 35-20 as the Bruins improved to 10-0-1-0 against the Sharks in their last 11 games.

Sharks in the Atlantic...

The Sharks (26-20-0-2) swim in 3rd place in the Atlantic Division with 54 points, three points behind the first place Providence Bruins. Worcester stands one point behind the Hartford Wolfpack for 2nd place and just one point ahead of 4th place Portland. Just nine points separate 1st place (Providence) and 5th place (Lowell) in a very choppy Atlantic Division.

Shark Bites:

*The Sharks finished January with a 9-3-0-1 record with 19 points in 13 games including 6-1-0-0 at home.

*Sharks captain and AHL All-Star Ryan Vesce received his first call-up to the NHL on Friday but did not suit up in any games before returning back to Worcester on Sunday.

*Vesce is currently 4th in the AHL in points with 49 (15-34-49) and tops in overtime goals (4) and game winning goals (7). He is currently riding a franchise-high 14 game point streak (7-14-21) and has 37 points (14-23-37) in his last 29gp.

*Lukas Kaspar continues to shine offensively, as he has 17 points in his last 16 games (6-11-17).

*Cory Larose had a nine game point streak (7-7-14) snapped on Sunday in Providence.

*The Sharks have 58 fighting major penalties this season through 48 games. 16 different players have dropped the gloves already this season (Frazer McLaren (15), Brett Westgarth (11), Mike Moore (8), Brad Staubitz (8), Jason Demers (2), Andrew Desjardins (2), Jamie McGinn (2), James McEwan (2), Tom Cavanagh, Dan DaSilva, Kyle McLaren, Brendan Buckley, TJ Fox, Cory Larose, Matt Jones and Riley Armstrong.

*Patrick Traverse is 14th in the AHL defenseman scoring race with 24 points (5-19-24).

*Worcester leads the AHL with shots per game (36.25) and first in shots against per game (25.81)

*Frazer McLaren is 3rd among AHL rookies with 15 fighting major penalties and 4th in pims (113).

*Steven Zalewski ranks 2nd among AHL rookies with 131 shots on goal and 12th in rookie scoring with 30 points (11-19-30). Zalewski recorded five points this week (3-2-5) with goals in all three games.

Roster Moves:

On January 27th, the San Jose Sharks recalled Mike Moore and Derek Joslin. This was the second recall for Derek Joslin and the first for Mike Moore. Moore was reassigned back to Worcester on the 29th and did not suit up in any games for San Jose.

Sharks Captain Ryan Vesce was recalled by San Jose on Friday, January 30th and returned on the 31st and did not suit up in any games for San Jose.

Coming Up:

The Worcester Sharks continue their seven game road trip with three games this week. The Sharks visit Portland on Wednesday in a battle for the Unum Cup, then travel to Manchester for a Friday night affair with the Monarchs. Worcester will end the week in Providence for a 4:05p.m. afternoon tilt on Sunday.
