Washington Mystics News Release
Washington, D.C. -The Washington Mystics acquired guard Matee Ajavon with the second pick in today's dispersal draft. Ajavon was selected fifth overall by the Houston Comets in the 2008 WNBA Draft held in April.
"We are extremely excited with the addition of Matee Ajavon to our roster today. She is one of the great young players in the league and demonstrated that by making an immediate impact in Houston last season. She had a very successful college career while playing for Coach Vivian Stringer, so not only has she learned the game from the best but she has also become a student of the game," said Mystics General Manager Angela Taylor. "Matee has the ability to have some very explosive offensive games and will eventually be a shut-down defender on the perimeter. Her competitive drive and intensity will be huge assets in our blue collar system."
During her rookie season, the 5'8 Ajavon played in every game and averaged 8.0 points per game, 1.8 rebounds per contest and 1.7 assists per outing. She started two games for the team and averaged 9.0 points per game and 2 assists per game in those contests.
A standout point guard at Rutgers University, Ajavon completed her collegiate career with a 109-32 team record and helped her school to four NCAA tournament appearances and to the 2007 National Championship game against the University of Tennessee. In 2007, she was named to the Final Four All-Tournament Team and the Big East Tournament Most Outstanding Player. Ajavon also earned additional honors such as All-Big East First Team in 2006, Big East Freshman of the Year and All-Big East Freshman Team in 2005.
Tomorrow, the WNBA will hold its Draft Lottery in New York City where the Washington Mystics will have the second best opportunity to gain the top pick in the 2009 draft. The Atlanta Dream, who finished 4-30, have the best statistical chance at the top pick.
The Washington Mystics organization is dedicated to providing affordable entertainment, serving as an impactful community partner and maintaining accessibility to positive female role models. Supported by passionate fans, the Mystics are elite, hardworking athletes continually striving to win a Championship.
