Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

A scrappy game led to lots of special-teams chances Friday at the Cornerstone Ice Center in Ashwobenon, Wisconsin, and the Green Bay Gamblers took advantage, topping the Waterloo Black Hawks 4-3.

The Gamblers opened the scoring 3:55 into the game on the only even-strength goal of the night. Jacob Johnstone found the net on a low shot from above the left wing circle, as Joe Howe was being screened by traffic in front of the net. Waterloo tied the game just before intermission at the tail-end of a five-on-three power play. Chris Student set up a Lee Moffie one-timer, beating Reid Ellingson high to the glove side at 19:18.

The second period was highlighted by more power play scores. Green Bay pulled back in front at 1:21 of the period with C.J. Lee barreling to the net for a goal off a feed from Reed Seckel out of the right wing corner. A long wrister from Green Bay's David Makowski on an advantage at 11:23 made the score 3-1. Waterloo edged closer during a second five-on-three power play as Craig Smith put in a low shot, through a maze of legs, at 16:48. Both teams had changed goalies at 10:20 of the second period; Dan Sullivan entered for the Black Hawks while Steve Summerhays came into the game for Green Bay.

Waterloo's third power play goal of the night - a shot from Dan Sova which caromed off at least one Gambler - tied the game at 4:26. However, back on the power play, the Hawks found themselves pinned in their own end, and a shorthanded goal by Ryan Furne at 13:43 proved to be the game-winner.

In all, the Black Hawks were three-for-ten on the power play, while the Gamblers were two-for-nine. Green Bay outshot Waterloo 24-23.

Saturday night the Hawks meet the Gamblers again at Young Arena, beginning at 7:05. Tickets for any seat at the rink are just $5. The match-up is the Hawks final game at Young Arena before the regular season home-opener against the Omaha Lancers on October 18th.
