Komets preseason roster grows to 28, home opener tickets go on sale Friday

Fort Wayne, IN - The Komets announced Wednesday that six players have been added to the preseason roster. Joining the Komets for training camp Oct. 6 will be goaltenders Sebastien Laplante and Tim Haun along with rookie forwards Rick Varone, Adam Shirley, Adam Sinewitz and Roy Stevens.

Sebastien, 27, will be entering his seventh pro season. He appeared in the CHL the last three seasons, splitting last year with Colorado and Wichita of the Central Hockey League. Sebastien totaled 45 CHL games last season and a 21-18-2 record. The netminder finished the season with a 2.77 goals-against average with Colorado. Sebastien began his career with Roanoke in the ECHL in 2002 and was selected by Los Angeles in round nine of the 2001 NHL Entry Draft.

Haun, 28, topped SPHL goaltenders last season during the regular season with a 2.45 goals-against average and .920 save percentage in 23 games. The rookie goaltender participated in two seasons with Augustana University of the ACAC from 2004 thru 2006 and appeared in games with Belgium in European play during 2006-07.

Varone (vuh-RONE-ee), 25, is a rookie center from Woodbridge, Ontario, and completed three seasons in the OPJHL from 2001 to 2004. He also appeared in 45 games with Oswego State of the NCAA from 2005 to 2007.

Shirley, 21, finished four seasons of juniors play in the OPJHL last season. Last year the rookie forward scored 35 goals, 47 assists for 82 points while accumulating 127 penalty minutes in 49 games with Vaughan.

Sinewitz, 24, is coming off a season of play in the Mid Atlantic Hockey League. The rookie forward split last season among three teams including Jamestown, Valley Forge and Wooster (29 games, 23 goals, 41 points). Sinewitz also skated three seasons in the NCAA with American International College from 2003-2006.

Stevens, 20, is a rookie forward from Milford, Michigan, and skated last season with Wooster of the AEHL scoring 15 goals, 43 assists for 58 points and earning 220 penalty minutes in 40 games.

"The signing of these six players will bring our training camp total to 28 with maybe one or two more possibly being added prior to the start of training camp," Komet general manage David Franke said. "We will have 15 rookies in camp which is the most we've had since 1990. Also we still have one veteran spot left if we find the right player between now and the early part of the season."

The Komet's 2008-09 roster includes 15 forwards, 10 defensemen and three goaltenders. Training camp begins with a noon press luncheon at the Memorial Coliseum Monday, Oct. 6. Details of the luncheon and a camp itinerary will be released at a later date.

Boucher invited to Norfolk camp....Komet goaltender Nick Boucher will be joining fellow Komets Mathieu Curadeau and Jason Beckett in the AHL's Norfolk Admirals training camp. Norfolk is the number one affiliate of the NHL Tampa Bay Lightning. Norfolk's training camp gets underway on Sept. 21.

Three exhibition games are scheduled. The Komets will host Bloomington Wednesday, Oct. 8 at 7:30pm and travel to Kalamazoo Friday, Oct. 10 for a 7:30pm faceoff at Wings Stadium. The Komets and Wings will conclude pre-season play with a 7:30pm match at the Coliseum in Fort Wayne Saturday, Oct. 11.

The Komet's defense of the Turner Cup championship begins on the road at Port Huron Friday, Oct. 17. The Fort Wayne home opener is slated for Saturday, Oct. 18 against the Flint Generals at 7:30pm.

Season tickets are on sale for 2008-09 at the Komet office at 1010 Memorial Way in Fort Wayne. Individual game tickets will go on sale at the Coliseum Ticket Office this Friday, September 19 at 10am. The Komet office is open Monday thru Thursday 9am-5pm and Friday's from 9am-4pm.
