Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
TROY, NY ---Steve Souza's three-run double snapped a 2-2 tie as the Vermont Lake Monsters scored five runs in the top of the seventh inning for a 7-4 victory over the Tri-City ValleyCats in New York-Penn League action Sunday evening at Bruno Stadium.
With two out and runners on first and second in the seventh, Tri-City reliever Kyle Godfrey walked Derek Norris on four pitches to load the bases. Souza followed by lining a Godfrey pitch up the left centerfield gap to empty the bases and give the Lake Monsters a 5-2 lead. Vermont added two more runs in the inning on a Jake Dugger RBI double and James Keithley RBI single.
The ValleyCats tried to rally in the ninth as they scored two runs on three hits and a walk off reliever Kevin Light with no outs. But Light got a pop out and strikeout before Austin Garrett came on to retire Phil Disher, who was second in the league in home runs and RBI, to end the game and earn his second save.
Vermont had jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning on a two-run homer from Keithley, his second home run in as many days after no homers in his first 34 games. Jose Pinales, making his second start for the Lake Monsters, gave up just one walk over the first three innings before Tri-City scored two runs (one earned) in the fourth on a Disher RBI triple and David Flores RBI groundout.
Carlos Peralta (4-0) came on in relief of Peralta to start the fifth inning and got his fourth win of the season as he allowed one hit with two walks and six strikeouts in three innings. Godfrey (1-4) was touched for five runs over 2 2/3 innings for the loss.
Souza, who entered the game in a 0-for-15 slump, went 3-for-5 with the three-run double. Keithley was 2-for-5 with three RBI of his own, while Marcus Jones had two hits and Dugger two runs scored. Vermont had 12 hits on the night, the most for the Lake Monsters in a game since 14 hits at Jamestown on July 13th, and every batter in the order had at least one hit except for Nick Arata who was hit by a pitch twice.
Vermont (29-39) heads to Oneonta for a doubleheader against the Tigers beginning at 6:00 pm on Monday. Brad Peacock is scheduled to start the opener for the Lake Monsters, while Jorge Urena will make his New York-Penn League debut in the nightcap after being promoted from the Gulf Coast League Nationals.
There may be additional newcomer to the Lake Monsters roster on Monday as Washington Nationals first baseman Dmtri Young joined the team on Sunday evening at Tri-City. Young, who is currently getting himself back into playing shape after going on the disabled list in July as he tries to get his diabetes under control, would be the first current Major Leaguer to play for Vermont on a rehab assignment in the team's 15-year history.
