Oklahoma City Comets News Release

LAST GAME: Oklahoma plated five early runs en route to a 8-5 win over Iowa Wednesday evening. Nate Gold hit his 23rd home run of the season and drove in three on three hits, and Casey Benjamin, Craig Gentry, Kevin Richardson, and Chris Shelton also had multi-hit games to lead the RedHawks attack. Tommy Hunter, making his first Triple-A start since late July, earned the win with a five inning outing. Micah Hoffpauir had three hits for the Cubs, while Josh Kroeger drove in a pair of runs. Mike Burns took the loss for Iowa.

MAGIC NUMBER NEWS: Oklahoma's magic number is at four after last night's RedHawk win and a loss by New Orleans in Albuquerque. Any combination of RedHawk wins and New Orleans losses that add up to four will clinch the American South Division, which could happen as early as Friday.

GET'EM WHILE THEY LAST:

RedHawk playoff tickets go on sale tonight at the ballpark and Friday at 9:00 am on the internet at www.oklahomaredhawks.com. Oklahoma would host game three on September 5 at 7:05 pm, and games four and five over the weekend if necessary. Saturday's game would also start at 7:05 pm, while the Sunday's tilt would begin at 2:05 pm. Tickets are also available for the Bricktown Showdown on Tuesday, September 16.

LONG TIME COMING:

Nate Gold's home run in the fifth inning last night was his first at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark since July 5. The RedHawks infielder took Randy Wells deep in the RedHawks only win of that three game series. Gold has hit only seven of his 23 home runs at the Brick this season and has hit only 15 of his 49 Triple-A long balls at home during his career (eight of 26 in 2007).

WELCOME BACK:

Nelson Cruz is expected to be activated off the RedHawks disabled list prior to tonight's game. Cruz suffered a strained left quad in Oklahoma's 5-4 loss to Las Vegas on August 1 and was placed on the disabled list the next day. The RedHawks went 8-10 this month without the MVP candidate in the lineup. Cruz is still among the Minor League leaders in several major offensive categories, including home runs (2nd), runs batted in (tied for 8th), and runs scored (tied for 4th).

IOWA AT A GLANCE:

Despite last night's loss, Iowa's magic number dropped to five when Memphis lost at Omaha... Bobby Scales second inning home run extended his hitting streak to eight games, currently the longest streak by any Cub... Iowa players have received league honors after each series with Oklahoma this season. Sean Gallagher was the PCL Pitcher of the Week after the April 19-22 series, Randy Wells earned the same honor after the May 23-26 set, and Micah Hoffpauir was the Batter of the Week after the three game series at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark in early July.

AROUND THE ORGANIZATION:

Texas bested Detroit 9-1. The Rangers got a pair of home runs from Travis Metcalf in the win... Frisco lost 14-12 at San Antonio in 12 innings... Bakersfield fell 5-0 to Lancaster... Clinton had the day off... Spokane fell 3-2 to Boise in 10 innings.

DOT-DOT-DOT:

Ryan Roberts tripled last night to extend his on-base streak to 16 straight games... The earned run charged to Jose Diaz in the sixth inning was the first allowed by the RedHawks bullpen during this homestand, spanning 11.2 innings of work... A corresponding roster move will need to be made to clear a spot on the active roster if Nelson Cruz is activated for tonight's game.

ON THE AIR:

Every game this season can be heard on the RedHawks Radio Network, led by broadcaster Jim Byers for the ninth season, and joined by Adam Marco during each homestand. Fox Sports Radio AM 1340 in Oklahoma City will serve as the flagship station in 2008. The network affiliates this season are KSIW 1450 AM in Woodward, KXCA 1380 AM in Lawton, KPNS 1350 AM in Duncan, KTJS 1420 AM in Hobart, KGFF 1450 AM in Shawnee, and KWSH 1260 AM in Wewoka. Each game will also be broadcast on the internet through the audio link at www.oklahomaredhawks.com.
