Portland pitcher recognized for outstanding outreach efforts in 2008

PORTLAND, Ore. - In recognition of his outstanding efforts in making a difference not only on, but off the playing field this season, Portland Beavers pitcher Dirk Hayhurst today was named the team's Community Player of the Year for the 2008 season.

Hayhurst, 27, most exemplified the goals of the Beavers' extensive Community Outreach Program by making a positive impact on community values, lending his time and energy to a number of causes, events and philanthropic activities throughout the season.

"There is nothing we do that is more important than community outreach, and nobody has embodied that ideal more this season than Dirk Hayhurst," said Merritt Paulson, president and general manager of the Beavers. "Dirk has both a unique passion and talent for connecting with youth in an effort to positively impact their lives."

Despite a 144-game schedule played over the course of 153 days during the season, Hayhurst lent considerable time and energy to a number of worthwhile causes during his third year in Portland.

Among his many contributions, Hayhurst spent time with kids participating in a special Challenge League activity day at PGE Park, exchanged stories and spent meaningful time with kids at Doernbecher Children's Hospital and interacted with students at Humboldt Elementary School while serving up pizza and talking about career goals.

Also leading a number of youth baseball camps at PGE Park, Hayhurst, who is from Canton, Ohio, has made it a point to make a difference off the field in each of the cities he has represented during his professional career, which began in 2003 when he was an eighth-round draft selection of the San Diego Padres. When on community appearances, Hayhurst stresses the fun of the game while, at the same time, speaking to the importance of getting a good education and following dreams.

Prior to tonight's game with Tacoma, Hayhurst will be presented with a commemorative painting produced by local artist Ken Rumbaugh in recognition of his efforts, not only this season, but for his contributions during his three years with the Beavers (2006-08).

On the field, Hayhurst has a 3-5 record, a 4.81 ERA and 111 strikeouts in 60 games (6 starts) in three seasons with the Portland club. This year, he is 2-3 with a 3.75 ERA, two saves and 98 strikeouts over 46 appearances (2 starts).

Hayhurst joins an impressive list of players who have shined in the community over the last four years. Infielder Bobby Scales was the inspiration for the Community Player of the Year award, receiving it in 2005. Catcher Luke Carlin and infielder Justin Leone shared the honor for the 2006 season, while Carlin again went above and beyond in his outreach efforts to win the Beavers Community Player of the Year award last season.
