Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
STATEN ISLAND, NY --- Melky Mesa hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the second inning to give Staten island a 4-1 lead and the Yankees went on to beat the Vermont Lake Monsters 6-1 in New York-Penn League action Saturday night at Richmond County Ballpark.
The win was the second of the day for the McNamara Division-leading Yankees (37-21), who came back from a 4-0 deficit to beat Vermont 5-4 in eight innings Saturday afternoon in a make up game of a rain out on Friday night.
Staten island jumped out on top in the bottom of the first inning of the nightcap as Addison Maruszak led off with a walk and scored on a David Adams RBI double off Vermont starter Pat McCoy. The Lake Monsters tied the game in the second on a two-out solo home run from Jake Dugger, his second home run of the season and Vermont's 37th home run as a team.
With runners on first and third with one out in the bottom of the second, Mesa smacked a 1-1 pitch just inside the left field foul pole for the three-run homer, and his sixth home run of the season, to give Staten Island the 4-1 lead. The Yankees added back-to-back RBI doubles from Dan Brewer and Jahdiel Santamaria in the third for a 6-1 lead.
McCoy (1-5) allowed six runs on six hits over three innings to take the loss, while reliever Randy Matias gave up one hit and struckout four in three scoreless innings of relief. Josue Selenes (5-0) tossed two scoreless innings of relief for Staten Island to pick up the victory.
Danny Espinoza, the Washington Nationals third-round selection in the 2008 Draft out of Long Beach State, went 2-for-3 with a double in his professional debut with Vermont. Espinoza, who agreed to terms with the Nationals on August 13th, smacked a double to left center in his first at bat and also singled in the fifth as the designated hitter. Dani Arias, who went 2-for-3 with two RBI in the afternoon game, was 2-for-4 in the nightcap for a four-hit day.
Vermont (23-33) will wrap up the three-game series at Staten Island with an afternoon game on Sunday beginning at 2:00 pm. The Lake Monsters will then be off for three days, with the New York-Penn League All-Star Game Tuesday at Tri-City, before returning to action on Thursday with the start of a six-game homestand.
