Springfield Cardinals News Release
The Corpus Christi Hooks sent the Springfield Cardinals to their second straight loss, dropping the Redbirds by a score of 4-1 on Saturday night in the opening game of a three-game series at Whataburger Field in Corpus Christi.
Springfield managed just one run on six hits against three different Hooks' pitchers.
Hooks' starter Bud Norris was removed in a scoreless tie with two outs and the bases loaded in the fifth inning. Corpus Christi turned to reliever Bo Hall (1-0), who retired Mark Shorey on a fly ball to left field for the final out.
The Hooks got on the board against Cards' starter Adam Ottavino in the bottom of the fifth, as Ole Sheldon doubled to left field, then scored on a Lou Santangelo hit to right field, making it 1-0.
Ottavino allowed a lead-off homer to Drew Sutton to open the sixth inning, giving the Hooks a 2-0 lead. Ottavino (2-7) was removed after working the sixth inning, allowing just two runs on eight hits over six frames in the loss.
Allen Craig's RBI double with two outs in the seventh chased home Isa Garcia, as Springfield cut the deficit to 2-1 against Hall.
Corpus Christi answered with single runs in the seventh and the eighth. With two outs and a runner at first base, Cards' reliever Josh Dew was called for a balk, moving Billy Hart to second base. Moments later, Dew gave up an RBI single to Jonny Ash, making it a 3-1 game. Marco Gonzalez gave up a one-out double to Brian Bogusevic in the eighth, then wild pitched him to third. Eli Iorg followed with a sac fly, making it a three-run game at 4-1.
Jose Oyervidez didn't allow a base-runner over the final two innings, earning his second save of the year for Corpus Christi.
The Cards (26-22) are now 3 ½ games back of Northwest Arkansas in the North Division. Springfield's Kyle Mura (3-2) will take on Corpus Christi's Casey Hudspeth (1-3) on Sunday night at 6:05pm in the second game of the series.
