Wisconsin Timber Rattlers News Release
GRAND CHUTE, WI - Alex Liddi broke a 2-2 tie with a fourth inning home run and Michael Pineda made it stand up with a career high 11 strikeouts and a little help from the bullpen. The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers beat the Great Lakes Loons 3-2 Sunday afternoon on Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium.
Wisconsin (13-30 second half, 44-65 overall) broke in front with a two-out, two-run double by Denny Almonte in the bottom of the first inning.
Pineda was cruising through the first three innings. He struck out seven and had allowed just two hits. But, he ran into trouble in the fourth. A double by Andrew Lambo and a single by Eduardo Perez put runners on the corners to start the inning for the Loons (16-27, 46-66).
Brandon Taylor sent a tailor-made double play ball to short, but the ball went through the legs of Juan Diaz. Lambo scored, Perez raced for third and Taylor reached. Jaime Ortiz followed with an RBI single to tie the game 2-2. Pineda escaped the inning with a 5-4-3 double play and a strikeout
The game did not stay tied for long. Liddi lined a 1-2 pitch over the wall in left-center to lead off the bottom of the fourth and the Rattlers went up 3-2.
Pineda regained his form and did not give up another run. He worked seven innings, scattered eight hits, did not walk a batter, and left with a 3-2 lead. The Rattler bullpen held on to that lead.
Wisconsin reliever Keith Meyer worked around a hit and a walk to pitch a scoreless eighth inning. Jeff Dunbar allowed a one-out single in the ninth, but closed out the Loons for his third save with the Rattlers.
The Rattlers are off on Monday. On Tuesday, they begin a brief four-game road trip to Clinton, Iowa. The scheduled starting pitcher for the Rattlers in the first game at Alliant Energy Field is Keith Renaud (1-2, 3.82). The LumberKings will counter with Ryan Tatusko (2-8, 4.44). Game time is 7:00pm.
