Peoria Chiefs News Release
Peoria, IL - In the completion of last night's suspended game the Chiefs rallied from down 8-6 in the 12th inning to score three times in the bottom of the 12th to beat Kane County 9-8.
The game began tied in the ninth inning after the Tuesday suspension at Wrigley Field. With the score tied 6-6, Cougars hurler Leonardo Espinal got out of a jam by retiring Luis Flores and Josh Harrison to send the game into extras. Neither team had much of a chance in the 10th or 11th.
Kane County loaded the bases in the 12th inning against Chiefs reliever Zach Ashwood. Todd Johnson started the inning with a single followed by a walk to Jake Smith. After a sacrifice bunt by Greg Dowling moved runners to second and third, Ashwood intentionally walked Petey Paramore to load the bases with one out. Justin Frash lined a base hit off Ashwood into left field to score Johnson and put the Cougars in front 7-6. Matt Ray delivered the second straight RBI single for the Cougars with a single back up the middle to score Smith and extend the Cougars lead to 8-6. Ashwood got Michael Richard to ground into a 1-2-3 double play to end the inning without any further damage.
The Chiefs took advantage of a lack of control by Kane County reliever Nick Walters to fuel their rally in the 12th inning. Walters issued walks to Flores, Harrison and Jonathan Wyatt to load the bases with only one out. Chad Kerfoot came out of the bullpen for Kane County and promptly hit Jovan Rosa with a 1-2 pitch to score pinch-runner Jake Opitz to make it 8-7. The next batter Luis Bautista lined a base hit into right field to score both Samson and Wyatt to give the Chiefs a 9-8 comeback win.
Despite allowing two runs on four hits over three innings, Ashwood picks up the win to move to 6-7 on the season. The lefty struck out three and walked two, one intentionally.
Player of the Day - Brandon Guyer (LF) - Guyer went 3-for-5 with a homer, triple, stolen base, a RBI and two runs scored. The homer was his ninth of the year and his second back-to-back of the year. He also had a game-tying run after tripling in the seventh.
