Wizards snap Kernels streak at four with 4-1 win

The Fort Wayne Wizards snapped the Cedar Rapids Kernels four game winning streak with a 4-1 victory in front of 3,085 fans at Dale and Thomas Popcorn Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Wednesday night.

The Kernels took an early 1-0 lead as Jeremy Moore doubled and scored on a hit-and-run play by Andrew Romine. Romine finished the game 2 for 4 and Clay Fuller was also 2 for 4 with two stolen bases. Julio Perez and Jay Brossman added doubles as the Kernels had nine hits in the game.

Fort Wayne tied the game 1-1 in the fifth and took the lead in the sixth as a dropped fly ball led to three unearned runs. Wizards starter Cory Luebke (2-1) allowed a run on eight hits and struck out four over 5.2 innings for the win and the MWL save leader, Jackson Quezada retired the Kernels in order in the ninth for his 23rd save.

Kernels starter Robert Fish (7-4) allowed four runs (one earned) on six hits and struck out seven over 5.2 innings in taking the loss. Tim Kiely allowed four hits and struck out two over 2.1 innings and Chris Armstrong worked out of a jam in the ninth, as he allowed a hit and struck out two.

The rubber game between the Kernels and Wizards is Thursday night at 7 pm from Dale and Thomas Popcorn Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium. It's Oncology Associates Cancer Awareness Night and 100.7 The Fox Thirsty Thursday. The Kernels will wear special jerseys that will be sold during the game via a silent auction with the proceeds to benefit Tour for the Cure. Fans can get $1.50 12 ounce draft beer and $2 bottled soda and water during the game.

Tickets may be purchased on-line at www.kernels.com , or by calling the Kernels Ticket Office at 896-7560 after 10 am on Thursday morning. The current home stand continues through Friday, August 8th.
