Hagerstown Suns News Release
HAGERSTOWN, MD - Tim Pahuta smashed a grand slam in the sixth inning to open up a night of offense for the Hagerstown Suns (17-18) as they beat the Greensboro Grasshoppers (13-22) 11-3 on Saturday Night.
Terrence Engles got the nod for the Suns as the right-hander gave an effective five and two-thirds innings performance. He struck out seven and held the Grasshoppers to three runs on nine hits.
In the first, Engles gave up four straight hits after he had retired the first two batters. Mike Stanton doubled and scored on a RBI single by Matt Dominguez, then Torre Langley brought home Dominguez with a single to center.
In the bottom of the fourth, Grasshopper Starter Brett Durand let Jesus Valdez take a free pass to first and later scored off of a single by Stephen King. Garrett Bass then singled and scored along with King on a double to right by catcher Robbie Jacobsen.
Enlges night ended after a Justin Jacobs sixth inning RBI double that tied the game at three. Jamie Lehman (1-1) got the third out to end the Grasshopper threat with a ground out to the shortstop.
The Suns offense exploded in the bottom half of the sixth as six runs came around to score. Eric Basurto (1-2) started the inning, but did not record an out as he served up a double to Michael Burgess, hit King with a pitch and let Bass reach with a single.
With the bases loaded and no outs, Jacobsen hit a hard ground ball to the shortstop Ozzie Martinez who was unable to make the play. The ball deflected off his glove into left field and allowed Burgess and King to score and take the lead.
Grasshopper reliever Kevin Gunter tried to minimize the damage, but was unable to hold off the Suns offense. After he struck out Jake Rogers, Gunter intentionally walked Mark Gildea and got Jose Lozada to ground into a fielder's choice at the plate.
Tim Pahuta then launched a grand slam, his 12th home run of the season, to center field to cap off the six run inning.
Two more Suns runs came in the seventh as Garrett Bass roped a double, his third hit of the game, and rounded the bases on two throwing errors by the Greensboro defense.
Lozada's sacrifice fly in the seventh gave the Suns eleven runs in total on the night. Scoreless outings by Lehman and Chris Lugo closed out the Suns rout as they took game two of the four game series.
The Suns and Grasshoppers return to action tomorrow afternoon at 2:05 from Municipal Stadium.
