Oh Canada! K-Tribe's Nick Weglarz Headed to the Olympics

KINSTON - 20-year-old K-Tribe outfielder Nick Weglarz will take a break from the Carolina League and head to his home nation of Canada to join Team Canada in preparation for their 2008 Olympic run. Weglarz will finish the current roadtrip with the K-Tribe this weekend and then head to Canada on Monday.

Weglarz has started 96 games for the K-Tribe this season, hitting .274 with 10 home runs and 38 RBI. He leads Kinston in triples (4), runs scored (65), walks (65) and on base percentage (.401). The left hander is hitting .329 in July.

Weglarz, a Stevensville, Ontario native, hit .450 with three home runs; seven RBI and eight runs scored in seven games helping Canada qualify for the Olympics over the winter in Taiwan. He will join former K-Triber and Cleveland farm hand (now with Double A Akron) T.J. Burton on the Canadian National Team. Cleveland also has two other Minor Leaguer's who made the roster for the USA National Team. Former K-Triber Jeff Stevens (now with Triple A Buffalo) and newly acquired Matt Laporta (with Double A Akron) are on the USA roster.

Weglarz will join team Canada in Toronto, and then return to North Carolina for four exhibition games in the Triangle against Team USA August 1st - 4th. Team Canada will start Olympic play on August 9th. Weglarz is scheduled to rejoin the K-Tribe at the end of August.

Kinston returns home to Grainger Stadium for a short three game homestand this Monday, July 28th - Wednesday, July 30th. Wednesday's 7pm finale features fireworks as a news crew from ABC's Good Morning America will be on hand doing a story about the K-Tribe. Tickets for the game on Wednesday, July 30th start at just $4. Every Wednesday home game is also Military Appreciation Night, where the Military (both active and retired) and their families get a reserved seat ticket absolutely free.
