DURHAM, NC-The Bulls kicked off Independence Week Tuesday at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park with a steady barrage of offense, beating the Charlotte Knights by a score of 8-2 and increasing their lead in the International League's South Division to eight games.
Chris Richard led the Bulls' charge, going 4-for-5 on the evening with a double, two runs batted in and a run scored. Elliot Johnson and Fernando Perez also doubled, and Ben Zobrist hit his second home run of the year. Raleigh-native Mike Prochaska (2-3, 7.01) had a solid outing in his first appearance in the Triangle since mid-April, going 5.1 innings, allowing seven hits, two runs and a walk while striking out three.
Charlotte knuckleballer Charlie Haeger (6-7, 4.29) gave up four runs-three earned-in six innings, allowing six hits, walking six and striking out three in defeat.
Independence Week continues Wednesday at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park when the Bulls continue their five-game home-and-home series with the Knights. Jeff Niemann (5-2, 4.20) will start for Durham, and Lance Broadway (8-4, 3.43) will go for Charlotte. First pitch will be at 7:05 p.m.
