RedHawks steal a win

June 10, 2008 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Oklahoma City Baseball Club News Release

The Oklahoma RedHawks beat the Nashville Sounds 4-3 with a walk off win at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark Tuesday evening. The Sounds rallied from a three run deficit, but the RedHawks scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth when Joaquin Arias was credited with a steal of home after Nelson Cruz induced in rundown between first and second base.

Oklahoma took an early lead on a solo home run by Chris Davis of Nashville starter Lindsay Gulin in the second inning. John Mayberry hit a solo home run to lead off the fourth and build the RedHawks lead to 2-0. The early run support backed starter Luis Mendoza, who pitched four shutout innings prior to leaving the game when he hit his pitch count. Mendoza is still working back to form from shoulder inflammation that put him on the Texas Rangers disabled list in April before being activated an optioned yesterday. Yukinaga Maeda followed with two shutout innings, striking out five of the six batters he faced. Mayberry also drove in Oklahoma's third run with a seventh inning double to extend the lead to 3-0.

Nashville would counter off Kaz Fukumori and Wes Littleton, scoring once off Fukumori in the eighth and twice on Littleton in the top of the ninth to tie the game. With one out in the bottom of the ninth, Arias singled and advanced to third on a subsequent single by Cruz. With Davis at the plate, Sounds reliever Zach Jackson attempted to pick Cruz off first base. Cruz worked into a rundown between first and second, and Arias took off for home, sliding in with a steal and a RedHawks win.

Littleton (3-1) earned the win, while Jackson (1-5) took the loss. Every RedHawk reached base on a hit or walk for the second straight game. Oklahoma has won two straight and all six games against Nashville this season. The RedHawks and Sounds play early on Wednesday with an 11:05 am first pitch slated at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark.
