Perez Leads Hooks to 10-1 VictoryMay 18, 2008 - Texas League (TL) Corpus Christi Hooks
Perez allowed just two singles during his six innings of shutout work to lead the Hooks to a 10-1 romp over the RockHounds at Citibank Ballpark. The Hooks have taken two of three in the series at Midland to improve to 24-19.
Perez (2-1) threw 84 pitches and faced just two batters over the minimum. Singles by Cliff Pennington in the first and Nick Blasi in the fifth were the only hits off Perez. Aaron Cunningham reached base in the third on a rare error by shortstop Tommy Manzella, but was thrown out by catcher Jose Lopez trying to steal second. Perez did not walk a batter and he struck out six.
Manzella got the Corpus Christi offense in gear with a first in franchise history - an inside-the-park home run. Drew Sutton singled with two out in the top of the third and Manzella, swinging at the first pitch from Andrew Bailey, sent a fly ball to left. Blasi made a leaping attempt at a catch, but the ball deflected off the curved wall back toward the left field line. Manzella rounded the bases and slid across home just ahead of the relay throw for his second round-tripper this season and a 2-0 Corpus Christi lead.
In the sixth, Eli Iorg sent an opposite-field, two-run home run to the berm in right to give the Hooks a 4-0 edge. Later in the inning, an RBI single to left-center by Lopez made it 5-0 for the visitors.
The Hooks blew the game wide open with a five-run seventh. Ole Sheldon's two-run double and Mitch Einertson's two-run homer to the berm in left highlighted the frame.
Midland's lone tally came in the eighth when Myron Leslie led off with a home run to right.
Bailey (1-3) was charged with five earned runs on eight hits over six innings. He struck out nine.
Sunday's win marked the seventh time this season the Hooks have scored in double figures. It also marked Corpus Christi's fourth win by nine runs or more.
The series at Midland concludes with a 6:30 start Monday night. Neither club has decided on a starting pitcher for Monday's game.
