Myrtle Beach Pelicans (25-15) vs. Wilmington Blue Rocks (18-21)
Friday, May 16 -- 7:05 PM
BB&T Coastal Field -- Myrtle Beach, SC
Game #41, Home Game #16
TODAY'S GAME AT A GLANCE: The Pelicans begin a six-game homestand with game one of a three-game series against the Wilmington Blue Rocks. The Pelicans are 6-1 against the Blue Rocks so far this season. They took three-of-four during their first matchup of the season (4/4-4/7) and swept the Blue Rocks in the second meeting of the season (5/9-5/11) with both series taking place at Frawley Stadium in Wilmington.
Last night, the Pelicans lost a heart-breaker to conclude their week-long road trip as the P-Nats used three home runs to down the Pelicans 4-3 to earn a split. The game turned into a slugfest early as the Pelicans took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on a Brandon Hicks homer. The P-Nats used a two-run home run by Matt Rogelstad in the seventh. It was the Pelicans first series split of the season.
TODAY'S STARTING PITCHERS: In a battle of right-handers, Chris Vines will make his second start of the season against Jason Godin for Wilmington. Godin and Vines started against each other on May 11th at Frawley Stadium in Wilmington, DE.
Vines: When Tommy Hanson was promoted to the Mississippi Braves (AA) on May 10th, there was a void in the rotation. Chris Vines stepped in admirably in his first start (5/11 vs. Wilmington), Vines excelled in 4.1 innings, surrendering only four hits and just one run. In seven total appearances this season, Vines has allowed just 15 hits and five runs in 21.1 innings. Over his last three appearances, he has allowed just one earned run in 11.1 innings.
A native of Birmingham, Alabama, Vines was selected in the fifth round of the 2003 June Free Agent Draft. In four professional seasons prior to 2008, Vines was 19-15 with a 4.50 ERA. For more information about Vines, see his bullpen notes.
Godin: In seven appearances, Godin has compiled 37.2 innings this season. The right-hander has allowed 38 hits and 23 runs. Godin pitched eight solid innings against the Pelicans on May 11th against Chris Vines. He did not allow an earned run. Godin has perfect 0.00 first inning ERA through his first seven starts.
Originally from Anchorage, AK, Godin attended Old Dominion University and currently makes his home in Stafford, VA. 2008 marks his third professional season after splitting the season in 2007 between Burlington (A) and Wilmington (A).
MISSISSIPPI PIPELINE GROWS: The Atlanta Braves made a couple of roster moves the last two days as they sent closer Kevin Gunderson up to Double-A Mississippi and utility infielder Chad Lundahl to Mississippi (AA). Gunderson was leading the Carolina League in saves with 10, while Lundahl was trying to find an everyday spot in the lineup, hitting .257. To replace Gunderson in the bullpen, the Braves added LHP Carlos Rivas from Rome.
PELICANS ON A DIET: The Myrtle Beach Pelicans are playing two players short of a full 25-man roster. When Tommy Hanson was promoted to Mississippi the Pelicans fell below the full 25-man roster. Even without Gorkys Hernandez and two roster spots short, the Pelicans have maintained a 5 1/2 game lead in the Southern Division.
ROAD WARRIORS PART FOUR: The Pelicans have performed admirably over their last 17 games, spending 14 of those 17 games on the road. The Pelicans finished the grueling stretch 12-5. The Pelicans won series over Lynchburg, Potomac, Salem and Wilmington. They most recently split the fifth series during the stretch against Potomac. Due to the stretch, the Pelicans have built a 5 1/2 game lead over the Winston-Salem Warthogs.
