Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

Myrtle Beach, S.C. - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans (26-15) snapped their two-game slide with a triumphant return to the Grand Strand, defeating the Wilmington Blue Rocks (18-22) by a final score of 6-2. The Pelicans illuminated the scoreboard for five runs in innings three through five combined en route to their league leading 26th victory of the season. For perspective, the Pelicans didn't record their 26th victory in 2007 until June 6th.

After scoring one run in the bottom of first, the Pelicans established a healthy lead in the third. Tyler Flowers nailed an RBI single to left that brought home Yohan Silva. Ernesto Mejia then followed suit, hitting an RBI single to drive home Flowers to give the Pelicans a 3-0 lead.

In the fifth inning, the Pelicans put the game out of reach. Brandon Powell led off by drawing a walk. Concepcion Rodriguez followed with a two-run homer that rattled off the first row of "Land Shark Landing".

Pelicans starter Chris Vines (2-0) was stellar in his second start of the season. In six innings, the right-hander allowed just four hits and did not give up a single run. Vines also tied his career high for strikeouts in a single game by fanning nine batters. Previously, Vines struck out nine against the Kannapolis Intimidators back on April 17th, 2006 as a member of the Rome Braves.

Brett Butts entered in the seventh and secured the victory for Vines. Butts ran into trouble in the eighth inning, when Chris McConnell and Kurt Mertins strung together back-to-back run scoring singles. Butts found his groove in the ninth to finish off the Blue Rocks.

The Pelicans take on the Wilmington Blue Rocks in the middle game of the series on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. The Pelicans will send LHP Kelvin Villa (1-0, 3.38) to the mound, while the Blue Rocks will send RHP Blake Wood (1-2, 3.38) to the hill.

For tickets and information to game two or any of the remaining home games at BB&T Coastal Field, call the Pelicans Box Office at 843-918-6000 or visit online at MyrtleBeachPelicans.com.
