Rainiers to have Food Free Zone to focus on Food Allergies with children

May 14, 2008 - Pacific Coast League (PCL) Tacoma Rainiers

Tacoma, WA - For many baseball fans grabbing a hot dog and peanuts at the ballpark is just part of enjoying America's pastime. What if the wheat in a hot dog bun gave you hives or the dust from peanut shells could trigger a potentially life threatening allergic reaction? Many folks in Washington, especially kids, deal with this dilemma every single day.

Because of this issue on Sunday, May 18th the Tacoma Rainiers will have a 'Food Free Zone' at Cheney Stadium where kids and their families affected by food allergies can watch a Rainiers game in a worry-free environment.

"A lot of us take for granted the great times and fun atmosphere at the ballpark." said Rainiers spokesman Geoff Corkum. "But we are cognizant that folks affected by food allergies do not have that luxury. We wanted to make sure there was a time and place for them to feel comfortable and have a great time at the ballpark as well."

During Saturday's game at 1:30 pm, one section of Cheney Stadium will be roped off and deemed a 'Food Free Zone', where no food from inside the park will be allowed. The 'Food Free Zone' will also receive event specific cleaning prior to first pitch. All traditional Cheney Stadium fare will be available in the rest of the stadium.

"For so many kids growing up with food allergies, there is so much they cannot experience due to the impact it could have on their health" said Anna McCartney with Washington FEAST. "by setting up a 'Food Free Zone' the Rainiers have helped these kids and their families take in some of those memorable opportunities."

Currently, more than 50 people have signed up to sit in the 'Food Free Zone.' Those with tickets to the 'Food Free Zone' will also have access to another pre-designated section of the Cheney Stadium concourse where they will be able to enjoy safe foods they have brought in from outside the park.

For more information about the Rainiers 'Food Free Zone' on Sunday, May 18 please contact Geoff Corkum with the Tacoma Rainiers at 253-376-5910 or Anna McCartney with Washington FEAST at 206-725.9311.
