Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release
MOBILE, Ala. - John Hester's two-run double put Mobile ahead for good in the sixth inning, the fourth lead change of the game, while three BayBears relievers combined to allow one unearned run on two hits in five innings leading the Mobile BayBears (17-19) to a 7-5 Saturday night victory over the Jacksonville Suns (16-20) in front of 4,683 at Hank Aaron Stadium.
The loss drops the Suns to third place in the Southern League South Division, three games back of the first place Birmingham Barons. Mobile moves to second place alone in the division, two games back of first place.
The back-and-forth scoring began in the second inning when Jacksonville broke through against Mobile starter Brooks Brown. Adam Godwin singled home Russell Mitchell for a 1-0 Suns lead.
Mobile struck back against Jacksonville starter Mario Alvarez in the bottom of the second inning, when a Brandon Burgess RBI single tied the game 1-1. Two batters later, pitcher Brooks Brown drove home two more runs on his fourth hit of the season, opening a 3-1 Mobile lead.
Jacksonville snatched the lead back right away in the top of the third inning. Juan Gonzalez doubled and James Tomlin beat out an infield single with one out. Lucas May next belted a three-run homerun to left-centerfield, his seventh of the season, opening a 4-3 Suns lead.
The Suns lead held until the sixth inning. Alvarez started the inning by hitting the leadoff man Rusty Ryal and left the game in favor of Brian Akin. The right-handed reliever allowed a double before inducing a fly-out for the first out of the inning. John Hester next doubled home two runs to open a 5-4 Mobile advantage. Brian Byrne next recorded a pinch-RBI single to plate Hester for a 6-4 lead.
Mobile's Rusty Ryal hit a two-out, solo homerun in the seventh inning against Akin, opening a 7-4 lead. Jacksonville finished the scoring in the eighth inning as an Adam Godwin groundout RBI scored Jamie Hoffman to make it 7-5 Mobile.
Vince Bongiovanni (1-1) picked up the relief win for Mobile while Brian Akin (1-3) fell in the relief loss for Jacksonville. Mahon (8) saved the game for the BayBears.
Suns RH James McDonald will face BayBears RH Tony Barnette Sunday at 7:05 p.m. ET. Fans can follow the action in Jacksonville on AM 930 the Fox or online at jaxsuns.com.
