Charleston RiverDogs News Release

CHARLESTON - It is only two weeks into the 2008 season, but the Charleston RiverDogs, the Class-A affiliate of the New York Yankees, have already set several club records thus far.

Entering Thursday night's contest at Savannah, the RiverDogs boast a 12-1 record, which is not only good for first place in the South Atlantic League's (SAL) Southern Division, but it also marks the best start since the RiverDogs moved into Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park in 1997 and also one of the best in league history.

The best start in Sally League history belongs to the Augusta GreenJackets, and strangely enough it came last season. The GreenJackets opened the 2007 season with a 12-0 record and then a 13-1 mark after 14 games. With a win in Savannah tonight, Charleston would match Augusta's 14-game record from last season.

Charleston is tied for the best record in all of professional baseball (including the Major Leagues) with the Kane County Cougars, the Class-A Midwest League affiliate of the Oakland Athletics located in Geneva, IL, who are also 12-1 after 13 games.

With last night's 6-5 victory over the Savannah Sand Gnats at Historic Grayson Stadium, the RiverDogs increased their current winning streak to nine straight, which equals a nine-game winning streak they registered in 1999.

Since the opening of Riley Park in 1997, the longest winning streak for Charleston is 10 consecutive victories, which occurred during the 2000 season. A win in Savannah tonight would equal that mark as well.

Last homestand, the RiverDogs accomplished a feat that had never been done in the history of Riley Park, as they completely swept an eight-game homestand in a pair of four-game series against the Sand Gnats and the Rome Braves. Charleston has won nine straight home games dating back to 2007, which leaves them just one win shy of the Riley Park record of 10 straight home wins, which occurred during the 2006 season.

Tonight, the RiverDogs will look to make it 10 wins in a row as they take on Savannah in the second game of a two-game series before venturing to Columbus, GA to clash with the SAL defending champion Columbus Catfish for a four-game set.

The RiverDogs return home April 24 for another eight-game homestand that includes games against the Catfish and the GreenJackets.
