JACKSONVILLE, FLA. - Marshall Hubbard collected five RBI, including a three-run triple and two-run homerun, pacing the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx (2-3) to a 12-4 Monday victory over the Jacksonville Suns (3-2) in front of 4,247 at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.
West Tenn reliever Travis Chick (1-0) collected the win while Jacksonville starter Mario Alvarez (0-1) picked up the loss. Ryan Ketchner started the game for West Tenn, his first start in the Southern League since starting for the Jacksonville Suns in 2004.
The Suns opened the scoring for the fourth time in five games, when Russell Mitchell connected on an RBI single to score Lucas May in the second inning for a 1-0 lead. Mitchell later scored on an Aldolfo Gonzalez sacrifice fly for a 2-0 Jacksonville lead.
West Tenn's offense then took advantage of mistakes during the fourth inning to jump ahead. With one out, Suns starter Mario Alvarez hit both Adam Moore and Shawn Garrett with pitches before walking Prentice Redman to load the bases. Marshall Hubbard next connected with a triple to right-centerfield that cleared the bases while opening a 3-2 West Tenn lead. After striking out Jon Nelson and walking Ronnie Prettyman, Alvarez was pulled from the game for reliever Cory Wade. Luis Valbuena then blooped a single to centerfield to plate Hubbard for a 4-2 Diamond Jaxx lead. Mike Saunders then executed a squeeze bunt that turned into an RBI single when Prettyman scored for a 5-2 advantage. Mark Kiger next came up for the second time in the inning, belting a three-run homerun onto the lawn in left field for an 8-2 Diamond Jaxx lead.
The Diamond Jaxx scored eight runs off of four hits in the fourth inning.
The Suns scored in the bottom of the fourth inning when Adam Godwin walked with the bases loaded to score Greg Jacobs for an 8-3 score.
Marshall Hubbard went back to work for West Tenn during the fifth inning when he belted a two-run homerun over the right field stands to open a 10-3 Diamond Jaxx lead.
The Suns scored their final run in the fifth inning when Juan Gonzalez doubled home Lucas May, cutting the West Tenn lead to 10-4.
West Tenn ended the scoring in the eighth inning as Mike Saunders doubled home two runs off of reliever Rick Asadoorian for a 12-4 Diamond Jaxx advantage.
Mario Alvarez (3.2 innings), Cory Wade (2.1 innings), Rick Asadoorian (2.0 innings) and Zach Hammes (1.0 innings) all saw time on the mound for Jacksonville. The Suns won the opening series of the 2008 season three games to two.
The Suns have Tuesday off to travel to Sevierville, Tenn. to start a series on Wednesday against the Tennessee Smokies (Cubs). First pitch is scheduled for 7:15 p.m., featuring Jacksonville RH James McDonald against Tennessee RH Justin Berg.
