Barons To Hold Negro Leagues Tribute Night

HOOVER, Ala. - The Birmingham Barons, the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute (BCRI), Alabama Negro Leagues Association, and Cox Radio, Inc. announced Monday a joint partnership to host a "Tribute to the Negro Leagues Night" at the Barons game on Tuesday, April 15.

The event will be held in conjunction with Major League Baseball's annual Jackie Robinson Day tribute, in honor of his breaking the "color barrier" to integrate the Major Leagues.

"April 15th is not only a very important day in baseball but more notably in American history," said Barons General Manager Jonathan Nelson. "We are honored to pay tribute to Jackie Robinson and the legendary Negro League players who live here in Birmingham. This tribute is a great partnership between the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, Cox Radio, the Alabama Negro League Association and the Birmingham Barons."

Game time between Birmingham and the Mississippi Braves on the 15th is set for 7:05 pm. The Barons players will be wearing throwback Birmingham Black Barons hats during the contest, and those hats will be auctioned off as part of an in-game silent auction. Other Negro Leagues memorabilia will be included in the auction, and all proceeds will benefit the Alabama Negro Leagues Association and the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute.

The night before the game, the BCRI will be hosting a private reception honoring the Negro League Legends.

As with all Tuesday Barons home games, quarter hot dogs will be on sale, presented by alabamamarriage.org. In addition, the Birmingham Zoo will be on site displaying animals from the Zoo. The first 1,500 fans through the gate will get Barons poster schedules, sponsored by Jeep.
