Boyer hat trick leads T-birds to victory

SEATTLE-Jeremy Boyer had three goals in the third period to lead the Seattle Thunderbirds to a 6-2 victory over the Tri-City Americans Friday night in front of 3,094 at KeyArena.

The game was tied 2-2 in the third period when Boyer scored the first of his three goals. His first goal came at 8:17 of the third and then he scored a second goal nine seconds after the first to give the T-Birds a 4-2 lead. Boyer's third goal came at 16:40 of the third.

Seattle improves to 3-0-1-1 and is the only team in the WHL without a loss in regulation time.

The T-Birds are back in action Saturday night at KeyArena at 7:05 p.m. to take on the Kamloops Blazers.

Seattle took a 1-0 lead on a power-play goal by Bud Holloway at the 5:37 mark of the first period. Scott Jackson took a shot from the left point that hit Jim O'Brien standing in the left circle just below and to the right of the face-off dot. O'Brien recovered the puck and made a cross-crease pass to Holloway who tapped the puck past Tri-City goalie Chet Pickard. It was Holloway's first goal of the year.

Seattle outshot Tri-City 6-5 in the first period.

Adam Hughesman scored at 14:37 of the second period to tie the game 1-1. Blair Macaulay had the only assist on the goal.

Jason Reese scored at 16:18 of the second to give the Americans a 2-1 lead. Colton Yellow Horn and Johnny Lazo had the assists.

Thomas Hickey tied the game 2-2 for the T-Birds at 17:55 of the second. On delayed penalty call on the Americans Hickey broke up the right side of the ice on a two-on-one. Just inside the top of the right circle Hickey cut towards the slot around the Americans defender. Hickey beat Pickard with a wrist shot on the stick side for his fourth goal of the year. Brenden Silvester and Brenden Dillon had the assists on Hickey's goal. Dillon's assist was his first point in the WHL.

Hickey increased his point streak to start the season to five games with the goal.

The Americans (7-2-0-0) outshot the T-Birds 14-6 in the second period and led 19-12 in total shots going into the second intermission.

Boyer gave the T-Birds a 3-2 lead at 8:17 of the third period when he converted a pass from Ian McKenzie. David Richard put the puck into the left corner where McKenzie got to it. He skated behind the goal and then centered the puck to Boyer in the crease. Boyer put the puck past Pickard for his first goal of the year.

Boyer scored nine seconds after his first goal to give the T-Birds a 4-2 lead. Boyer won the face off back to Hickey. Hickey moved the puck forward to Richard on the left side. Richard skated down the left side and then passed to Boyer charging towards the crease. Boyer beat Pickard high for his second goal of the night. Boyer's two goals were the fastest two goals scored by a T-Bird this season.

Greg Scott gave the T-Birds a 5-2 lead when he scored an unassisted shorthanded goal at 14:18 of the third. Scott got the puck in the neutral zone on the right side. He beat a defender to the inside and put a shot on Pickard. The Tri-City goalie couldn't control the rebound and Scott was able to poke the puck past Pickard five-hole for his third goal of the year.

Boyer completed the hat trick at 16:40 of the third. Seattle goalie Riku Helenius moved the puck up the left boards. Boyer broke out of the neutral zone on a two-on-one with McKenzie on his right. He came into the Americans zone and inside the left circle Boyer ripped a snap shot past Pickard high on the glove side.

Tri-City outshot Seattle 30-20 in the game.

Helenius made 30 saves on 32 shots, including several stellar saves in the second period to keep the T-Birds in the game, and improved his record to 3-0-1- 0.

Pickard made 14 saves on 20 shots and his record is now 6-1-0-0.
