Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

Tyler Johnson scored the game winning run in the top of the eighth inning on a throwing error by Beloit catcher Danny Berg to give the Cedar Rapids Kernels a 5-4 win over the Beloit Snappers at Pohlman Field in Beloit, WI on Tuesday night.

Johnson had tripled with two outs and when Ryan Mount struck out, Berg dropped the third strike and threw wide at first base trying to retire Mount. The errant throw let Johnson score the game winning run.

Matt Sweeney led the Kernels offense as he was 2 for 4 with 3 RBI and hit a leadoff home run in the sixth inning, his 18th of the season. Hank Conger was 1 for 3 with a double and an RBI on a sac fly and Anderson Rosario was 1 for 4 with a double.

Kernels starter Tommy Mendoza allowed four runs on eight hits, walked four and struck out four over 5.2 innings in a no-decision effort. Barret Browning (8-4) picked up the win in relief, throwing 2.1 innings and allowing two hits with a walk and two strikeouts. Warner Madrigal pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his 19th save of the season.

Beloit reliever Tyler Robertson (8-5) was the tough luck loser, allowing a hit and unearned run over three innings with five strikeouts and no walks.

The win improves the Kernels second half record to 36-28 and 74-59 overall as they keep 4-1/2 games behind Quad Cities and a game ahead of Kane County and Peoria in the chase for the MWL post season.

Cedar Rapids and Beloit wrap up this two game series on Wednesday night at Pohlman Field as Trevor Bell starts for the Kernels against Matthew Fox for the Snappers. The game can be heard on the internet at www.kernels.com and on 1450 KMRY AM in eastern Iowa.

The Kernels host Burlington on Thursday and Friday at Veterans Memorial Stadium for the final two home regular season games. Game time is 7 pm and Friday's game features Skyy Dogs USA and a post-game fireworks show. Tickets are available by calling the Kernel Ticket Office at 896-7560 after 10 am on Wednesday.
