Travs Still Half Game Back After Split With Cards

Dickey-Stephens Park, North Little Rock, AR - The Arkansas Travelers (31-30, 62-69) remained a half-game out of first place after splitting a doubleheader with the Springfield Cardinals (31-29, 67-60). Sean Rodriguez hit his third home run (15) over four games and was 3-for-3 in leading the Travs to a 5-4 victory. RHP Darren O'Day stranded the tying run at third base to save his eighth game, while RHP Nick Adenhart (10-7) struck out six batters and allowed three runs in 5.1 innings for his second straight victory. He defeated RHP Mitch Boggs (10-7) who absorbed five runs on 11 hits in 5.1 innings. The Cards retook first place from the Travs with a 4-0 victory in the nightcap led by two doubles and a home run (25) by Colby Rasmus. RHP Von Stertzbach (1-2) took the loss giving up a two-run homer to Cody Haerther (4). The Travs also lost a half-game to Tulsa in the overall standings and now sit 2.5 games out of the wildcard.

GAME ONE

While the Cards were stymied in their attempt to take a first-inning lead leading two runners on base, the Travs cashed in during their first inning at bat. Adam Morrissey lined a one-out single to right field then Boggs hit Freddy Sandoval with an 0-2 pitch. Sean Rodriguez then reached on an infield single chopped off the plate to load the bases. Corey Myers brought in the game's first run with a line drive sacrifice fly to right field.

The Travs took a 2-0 lead when Matt Pali lined a solo home run (6) off Boggs in the second inning.

Three more Travs base hits led to another run in the third inning. Singles by Rodriguez and Myers put runners at first and second. Ben Johnson followed with a line shot past first base that was interefered with by a fan in the right-field bleachers. One run scored on the play and the Travs led 3-0.

The Cards were held to just two hits and no runs until the fourth inning when Amaury Marti hit a one-out double and advanced to third base on a single from Bryan Anderson. Adenhart loaded the bases with a walk to Reid Gorecki, and Mark Hamilton followed with an RBI single to centerfield. The bases remained loaded and the Cards got within a run on a sacrifice fly by Casey Rowlett. Adenhart held the lead by inducing Rasmus into a grounder to the mound.

The Travs got those two runs back in the bottom of the fourth. Coon led off with a hard grounder that took a bad hop for a single then he stole second base and moved to third base when Morrissey grounded to the mound. Sandoval's sacrifice fly scored Coon, then Rodriguez hit a towering home run just over the left field fence for a 5-2 lead.

Adenhart struck out the side in the fifth inning, but allowed a pair of hits and a walk in the sixth and left with runners the bases loaded and one out. O'Day forced in a run with a walk to Jose Martinez then ran a full count on Cody Haerther. He hit a liner right to Morrissey and he ended the inning by doubling Rasmus off second base.

O'Day returned for the seventh inning with a 5-3 lead and hit Marti with one out. A two-out walk moved Marti to second base and he scored when Hamilton singled into right field. With the Travs' lead cut to one run the Cards had the tying run at third base when O'Day struck out Rowlett to end the game.

GAME TWO

RHP David Austen made the spot start and delivered two shutout innings, while the Travs frittered away their first three base runners against LHP Adam Daniels. Coby Smith hit a leadoff single then attempted to advanced to third base on a hard lined single to right by Morrissey. RF Reid Gorecki pegged Smith at third base, then Morrissey was thrown out by C Henry Guerrero trying to advance to second on a pitch in the dirt.

Daniels walked Rodriguez to begin the second inning, but Guerrero also threw him out attemping to run to second base on a pitch in the dirt.

Stertzbach relieved for the third and Rasmus smacked a leadoff double. With one out, Haerther turned on a 3-2 pitch and drove a two-run homer over the right-center field wall.

Daniels left the game after retiring the last eight batters faced over a four-inning start. McClellan pitched a shutout fifth inning while the Cards tallied a run against RHP Rafael Rodriguez in the fifth. Rasmus hit another leadoff double and was moved to third when Martinez flied out to right field. Rico Washington's sacrifice fly to center brought in Rasmus for a 3-0 Springfield lead.

Rasmus led off the seventh with a line drive homer off RHP Bill Edwards to cap the scoring.

Time of the first game was 2:25 and the second game was played in 2:02. The paid attendance to both games was 7,593.

The Travs and Cards play the third game of their four-game series on Sunday evening. RHP Bobby Mosebach (11-7, 4.28 ERA for Rancho Cucamonga) makes his double-A debut for the Travs while the Cards counter with RHP P.J. Walters (2-3, 2.83 ERA). First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m. and the paid attendance was 5:00 p.m.
