
JackHammers Muscle Their Way To A 13-7 Win

KANSAS CITY, KS-The Joliet JackHammers (4-4) scored 13 runs on 19 hits to walk away with a 13-7 victory over the Kansas City T-Bones (3-5) before 6,649 fans at CommunityAmerica Ballpark on Thursday morning. The JackHammers won the series three games to one and now move into second place in the South Division for at least Thursday afternoon. The loser of Thursday evening's game between Gary and Schaumburg will occupy second place with the JackHammers.
Kansas City scored a run in the second inning against Joliet right-hander Nate Sevier (8-2). Geoff McCallum (2-5) hit a leadoff double and scored on a single by Rob Watson (2-4). Kansas City took a 1-0 lead in the first inning.
The JackHammers sent nine men to the plate in the third inning and scored three runs against Kansas City starting pitcher Dan Jackson (1-4). Eric Scriven (2-5) led off the inning with a double and scored when Cory Harris (4-6) hit a double off the top of the left field wall. Scriven scored to tie the game at 1-1.
Harris was caught in a rundown on a ground ball hit by Juan Diaz (3-5), who reached first base on a fielder's choice. Chad Ehrnsberger (1-4) worked a walk and then Derek Nicholson (3-6) hit an RBI single to score Diaz and give the JackHammers a 2-1 lead.
Chris Brown (2-5) walked to load the bases and Kevin Sullivan (1-4) worked a walk to score Ehrnsberger and make it 3-1 Joliet.
The T-Bones took a 4-3 lead with a three-run third inning against Sevier. Rob Watson (2-4) and Mario Delgado (1-3) worked back-to-back walks to start off the inning.
Al Benjamin (1-5) hit an RBI double to score Watson. Delgado scored on a sacrifice fly by Calvin Pickering (1-3) and Benjamin crossed home plate on a sacrifice fly by Brown to make it 4-3 in favor of the T-Bones.
The JackHammers batted around to score five runs on six hits in the fourth inning. Harris hit a one-out single and scored on a two-run home run by Tim Hutting (2-6). The JackHammers re-took the lead at 5-4.
Diaz followed the home run with a single and went to second base on a walk by Ehrnsberger. Nicholson singled to load the bases for Brown.
Brown hit a two-run double to give Joliet a 7-4 lead. The JackHammers would go on to score two more runs to walk away with an 11-4 lead.
The T-Bones scored three runs over the fifth and sixth innings to get within two runs at 9-7.
Joliet exploded for four runs in the eighth inning to take a 13-7 lead. Diaz hit a one-out singled and scored on a two-run home run by Nicholson. Kevin Sullivan (1-4) added a solo home run and Joliet scored one more run to round out the scoring.
Sevier pitched five and one-thirds innings and allowed seven runs on seven hits while walking five and striking out one to pick up his eighth win of the season.
Loose Gravel: The JackHammers batted around in three separate innings Thursday. Joliet sent nine men to the plate in the third and eighth innings. Ten JackHammers came to the plate in the fourth inning.
The JackHammers now travel to Gary to take on the Gary SouthShore RailCats on Friday night at U.S. Steel Yard. Nick Renault (5-5, 4.54) will make the start for Joliet against Jason Shelly (2-1, 7.71) for the RailCats.
