Burlington Bees News Release
Lansing, MI (July 18, 2007) - Jesus Soto had a homer among three hits and scored three runs and Jason Godin turned in seven solid innings to lead the Burlington Bees (15-10, 45-49) to a 7-5 win over the Lansing Lugnuts (14-11, 49-45) at Oldsmobile Park this afternoon. The Bees have matched their longest winning streak of the season with five straight wins and now lead this series 2-0 over the Lugnuts. The Bees won five in a row earlier in the year at home, April 13th-16th.
Lugnuts' starter Nate Starner came out firing. He struck out the first six Bees' he faced to start the game and seven in a row before Soto got the Bees on the board with a long home run to left. The homer pulled the Bees to within one after the Lugnuts got two in the bottom of the second on a two-run double by Jonathan Diaz. The Bees pulled even in the fourth when Brady Everett belted a solo homer of his own to left. It was Everett's eighth home run of the season. The Bees took the lead in the top of the fifth inning. Soto drew a leadoff walk, Felix Peralta reached on an infield single, and Derrick Robinson advanced the runners to second and third with a sacrifice bunt. After an intentional walk to Jeff Bianchi, Joe Dickerson hit a groundball to third that could've been an inning-ending double play, but Josh Bell bobbled the ball and had to hustle just to step on third base for a force out as Soto scored with the go-ahead run. After a walk to Everett, Edward Rodriguez was called out of the bullpen and he hit Michael Thompson with a pitch to force in another run before getting out of the inning. Starner (8-8) was charged with all four runs and ended up as the losing pitcher.
Godin (3-1) allowed a leadoff single to Yuber Rodriguez in the third inning and then went on to retire the next nine in a row. He allowed one more run in the seventh. Matt Liuzza doubled and scored on two groundouts. Godin not only got the win, but also matched his career-highs with seven innings pitched and six strikeouts.
The Bees added some important insurance runs in the eighth inning. Ted Serro was on in relief for Lansing. With two on thanks to a pair of walks, and two outs, Bianchi hit a ground ball to third that ate up Bell and went into left field for an error as Soto scored. Lansing brought in lefty Ron Lowe to face Dickerson, and Dickerson lined a double to left to drive in a second run. Dickerson also doubled in the seventh inning to extend his hitting streak to eleven, setting a new team-high. He has also hit safely in a league-best 20 straight road games. The runs were huge as Lansing rallied for two in the bottom of the eighth against Jim Wladyka. Travis Snider had an RBI triple and scored on a base hit by Jonathan Jaspe. Wladyka came out after just a third of an inning, but Chris Hayes was able to come in and end the threat. The Bees added an insurance run in the ninth on a pinch-hit RBI single by Kurt Mertins who now has a hit in five straight at-bats. Hayes then finished off the bottom of the ninth inning to earn his eighth save.
The Bees and Lugnuts continue this series tomorrow night with a 6:05 Central Time start from Oldsmobile Park. RH Mario Santiago (1-6, 2.89) will start for the Bees against RH Graham Godfrey (5-4, 4.55) for the Lugnuts. The game will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 5:45.
