Springfield Cardinals News Release

Springfield shortstop Jose Martinez snapped a 2-2 tie with a two-out RBI single in the eighth, as the Cardinals took the opening game of a four-game set, edging the Tulsa Drillers by a score of 3-2 on Sunday evening at Drillers Stadium in Tulsa.

Tied 2-2 in the top of the eighth inning, Tulsa reliever Juan Morillo walked Casey Rowlett on a 3-2 pitch with two outs. Mark Shorey worked Morillo (4-4) for another walk on a 3-2 pitch to put the go-ahead run in scoring position. Jose Martinez then lined a 1-0 pitch into center field, plating Rowlett with the eventual winning run, as the Cards took a 3-2 lead.

Jason Motte worked around a one-out bunt-single by Jordan Czarniecki in the eighth, tossing a scoreless frame to get the ball to closer Chris Perez.

Perez got the first two outs, but hit Chris Frey in the foot on a 1-2 pitch, putting the tying run on base. After a passed ball by catcher Bryan Anderson allowed Frey to move to second, Perez fanned Tulsa catcher Tommy Duenas to end the game, giving Perez his 24th save in 25 attempts.

The Cardinals got a strong outing from starting pitcher Eric Haberer, who earned his fourth win in as many starts.

The Cards got Haberer an early lead in the first, as Mark Hamilton's RBI single put the Cards up 1-0.

Haberer's only rough inning came in the second, as he gave up a pair of runs on five hits. The damage could have been worse, but Sean Danielson threw out Aaron Rifkin at the plate for the first out of the inning. Tulsa starter Zack Parker's two-out single up the middle plated both Tulsa runs, as the Drillers went up 2-1.

Springfield got even in the third, as Juan Lucena walked and later scored on a sac fly off the bat of Rowlett, tying the game at 2-2.

Haberer (8-4) settled down after the second inning, at one point, retiring ten in a row. When the Cards took the lead in the eighth, they turned to the bullpen, ending Haberer's night after seven innings. He allowed just two runs on six hits, striking out four while walking just one.

Tulsa starter Zack Parker couldn't get out of the fourth, as he went just 3 1/3 innings, giving up two runs on four hits in the no-decision.

Springfield improves to 16-7 in the second half and 52-38 overall. They look to improve upon their 3-2 road trip on Monday night, sending Adam Daniels (3-2) to the mound against Tulsa right-hander Ryan Mattheus (6-6). Game time from Tulsa on Monday is 7:05pm.
