
Buchholz Fires Five No-hit Innings But Dogs Lose To New Hampshire, 3-1

(Portland, ME) - The New Hampshire Fisher Cats snapped a 1-1 tie by scoring two runs in the top of the ninth inning to beat the Sea Dogs, 3-1 in the series opener on Saturday night in front of a sellout crowd of 7,368 at Hadlock Field. Portland drops to 3-3 on their 9-game homestand.
Clay Buchholz fired five hitless innings for the Sea Dogs but did not figure in the decision. Buchholz held the 'Cats scoreless over five frames on two walks and four strikeouts. The righthander, who leads the Eastern League in strikeouts and ERA, lowered his earned run average to 1.69.
Jesse Carlson (5-1) pitched a perfect eighth and fanned two to earn the win for New Hampshire. Tracy Thorpe worked around a Jeff Natale double with two outs in the ninth inning to earn his third save of the season. New Hampshire's bullpen retired 11 of the final 13 batters.
T.J. Nall (0-1) suffered the loss for the Sea Dogs, allowing two runs in the ninth inning on David Smith's sacrifice fly and Ryan Patterson's run-scoring single. Nall was released by the Washington Nationals last week and signed by the Boston Red Sox as a free-agent on Saturday morning.
Portland scored the game's first run in the sixth inning off Seth Overbey. Jeff Corsaletti reached on a fielder's choice but shortstop Ryan Klosterman's return throw to first base sailed into Portland's dugout, scoring Zack Borowiak. The Fisher Cats scored an unearned run of their own in the top of the seventh inning when Chip Cannon hit a ground ball through the first baseman (Natale) to tie the game at one.
Kyle Jackson worked three innings for the Sea Dogs, allowing one unearned run on two hits and a walk. The Sea Dogs stranded twelve runners and went 0-for-11 with runners-in-scoring position.
Portland and New Hampshire play a day game on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 PM. RHP Michael Bowden (3-3, 4.95) takes on Ismael Ramirez (0-0, 2.70).
