New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
Portland, ME- David Smith hit a sacrifice fly, and Ryan Patterson lined an RBI single as the New Hampshire Fisher Cats scored two runs in the top of the ninth inning to defeat the Portland Sea Dogs, 3-1, Saturday night at Hadlock Field.
With a runner on second base, Tracy Thorpe earned his third save by inducing a game-ending pop fly off the bat of Jay Johnson, the RELCO Enlightening Play of the Game.
Thorpe worked one inning in relief of winner Jesse Carlson (5-1), who struck out two of the three batters he faced in a perfect eighth inning.
TJ Nall (3-10), making his Portland debut, suffered the loss by allowing two runs on two hits and two walks in one inning.
Portland (40-37) broke a scoreless tie by scoring an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth inning against Seth Overbey. Zach Borowiak singled and Iggy Suarez walked. Jeff Corsaletti grounded into a fielder's choice, with Suarez getting thrown out at second base. But Ryan Klosterman's relay throw went wide of first, allowing Borowiak to score, staking the Sea Dogs to a 1-0 lead.
New Hampshire (42-37) drew even, 1-1, against Litchfield's Kyle Jackson when Chip Cannon's two-out grounder skirted through the legs of Portland first baseman Jeff Natale in the top of the seventh inning, allowing Aaron Mathews (1-1, 2 R, 3 BB) to score.
Jackson allowed just the one unearned run in three innings. He allowed two hits and walked one.
Ricky Romero went 4.1 shutout innings. The left-hander walked a season-high five batters, but struck out three and scattered three hits.
Portland starter Clay Buchholz worked five no-hit innings, recorded four strikeouts and walked two.
The Fisher Cats, who take over sole possession of second place by a full game over the Sea Dogs, send right-hander Ismael Ramirez (0-0, 2.70) to the mound against Portland righty Michael Bowden (-3-3, 4.95) for a 1:00pm game Sunday afternoon at Hadlock Field. Radio coverage begins at 12:40pm on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network (610-AM, Manchester; 930-AM, Rochester; 1540-AM, Exeter) with Mike Murphy.
The Fisher Cats return to Merchantsauto.com Stadium Saturday night, July 7, for a 7:05pm game against the Portland Sea Dogs.
