Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
Myrtle Beach Pelicans (Atlanta Braves) (24-32) At Lynchburg Hillcats (Pittsburgh Pirates)(28-26)
Today's Starters: Myrtle Beach - RHP Moises Hernandez (8-2, 3.06 ERA)
Lynchburg - RHP Todd Redmond (4-4, 3.33 ERA)
Myrtle Musings...
Daylight Demons...The Pelicans thought they had played their final day game at home, but with the NCAA Myrtle Beach Regional taking place at Coastal Federal Field yesterday's game was switched to a 10:30 a.m. start time and the Birds fell to 1-6 at home during the day with a 6-4 loss to Lynchburg. Myrtle Beach won its first day game at home all the way back on April 8th in a 2-1 triumph over Wilmington before dropping the last six.
Jonny Quest...One big inning did in Pelicans starter Jonny Venters yesterday, as he surrendered five runs in the top of the third and Myrtle Beach was unable to recover. Venters gave up a pair of two-run homers in the inning to Jason Delaney and Tony Mansolino, and the latter was Mansolino's first of the year. Delaney added a solo home run in the seventh and became the second Hillcat to hit two homers in one game at Coastal Federal Field this year; Steven Pearce did it previously on April 29th, the last game he played for Lynchburg before being promoted to Class AA Altoona.
Hawaiian Punch...1B Isaiah Ka'aihue is heating up along with the weather at the beach, reaching base four times yesterday on the strength of a walk and his third three-hit game of the year. Ka'aihue also collected his team-leading 30th RBI with a run-scoring double in the ninth, and at .259 his average is at its highest point of the year. Since an 0-14 stretch dropped his average to.216 on May 21st Ka'aihue has racked up hits in 10 of his last 12 ball games (including four multi-hit efforts) with 10 walks, four doubles, three home runs, 10 runs scored and 10 RBI. Ka'aihue also scored a run in eight straight games from May 26th-June 2nd, tying his own franchise record (Brandon Jones also accomplished it) and drew a walk in seven straight games from May 26th-June 1st to tie another franchise record. On his current four-game hitting streak Ka'aihue is batting .500 (7-14) with a home run and six RBI.
Summer of â49...Ka'aihue wasn't the only Pelican to enter the record books over the road trip, as LHP Jake Stevens made his 49th career start in a Pelicans uniform Saturday in Frederick, passing Chris Waters who made 48 starts between 2002-05. Stevens left with the lead but was denied his fifth win of the year as the Keys came back to win 9-8.
Did You Know...Myrtle Beach has fallen 10.5 games behind first-place Kinston in the Southern Division, the farthest back the Birds have been all year. Luckily the Pelicans will have a chance to regroup June 21st when they begin the second half.
