Baez Hired To Coach In Mets Organization

(Central Islip, N.Y., May 16, 2007) - Long Island Ducks team officials today announced that infield coach Kevin Baez has accepted a coaching position with the New York Mets organization. Baez will report to the Mets' spring training facility in Port St. Lucie on Wednesday and coach in New York's minor league system this summer.
"We're excited for Kevin and wish him the best with the Mets and in all his future endeavors," says Ducks principal owner and Atlantic League CEO Frank Boulton. "He is a good friend of ours and for more than five seasons has been an essential part of the success of the Ducks organization, both as a player and a coach."
Baez spent three seasons as part of the Ducks infield, and in 2004 helped lead Long Island to its first Atlantic League championship, batting .256 with 36 runs scored and 40 RBI in 98 games. He was selected to play in the league All-Star Game that year and took home MVP honors, going 2-for-4 with two RBI and scoring the game-winning run. He became a fulltime coach with the Ducks in 2005, helping guide the team to the playoffs in each of the past two seasons.
The 39-year-old made three stops in the big leagues during his career, all with the Mets. His most lengthy stay came in 1993 when he appeared in 52 games at shortstop for New York. A veteran of 1,750 minor league games, the Brooklyn native registered career-highs in hits (113) and doubles (27) in 2000 with Norfolk (AAA, Mets) of the International League.
