Westminster College Graduate Among Five Sliders Draftees

Slippery Rock, PA -The Slippery Rock Sliders professional baseball team has announced the signing of five players from the Frontier League's annual Tryout Camp and Draft plus the acquisition of a third baseman from the Florence Freedom. Included in the new players is left-handed pitcher Brenton Gilmore, a 2006 graduate of Westminster College in New Wilmington, Pennsylvania and a current resident of New Castle.

Gilmore pitched for the Titans for four seasons, appearing in 37 games, 26 of which were starts. He finished his career with an 11-10 record, one save, and a 4.69 ERA. Gilmore is a graduate of Blairsville (PA) High School where he was teammates with a fellow Slider pitcher, Greg Lasinski.

Slippery Rock had the first overall pick in the Frontier League draft and selected catcher Dustin Rowland out of Lincoln Memorial University. Rowland just completed his senior season with the Railsplitters, hitting .387 with 14 doubles, two home runs, and 51 RBI. A native of Eagle River, Alaska, Rowland hit .410 in 2006, ranking in the top 50 in NCAA Division II. The Sliders also acquired Rowland's college teammate, third baseman Michael Richardson, in a trade with the Florence Freedom. Richardson hit .324 with 17 doubles, three home runs, and 44 RBI this spring after finishing 2006 with a .344 average.

Other Slider draft picks were LHP Eddie Martinez, RHP Luke Katich (4-0 with 7 saves and a 1.82 ERA for Wooster College in 2005), and RHP Steve Less (4-4 with a 1.99 ERA for Wittenberg College in 2006). Katich will join his cousin John Katich on the Sliders' pitching staff and was a college teammate of another Slider hurler, Jon Oliver. The Slippery Rock Sliders will begin their inaugural season on Wednesday, May 23, at the Washington Wild Things. The home opener will be on Tuesday, May 29, against the Florence Freedom. 32 home games will be at Jack Critchfield Park on the campus of Slippery Rock University.
