Sea Dogs defencemen named to Team Canada

CALGARY, April 5, 2007 - Saint John Sea Dogs defencemen Alex Grant and Yann Sauvé have been named to the roster of Team Canada for the 2007 IIHF World Under-18 Championship which begins in Tampere and Rauma, Finland on April 11.

Announcement of their inclusion on the national Under-18 roster was made today by Hockey Canada and the Canadian Hockey League (CHL). The pair are former first-overall Quebec Major Hockey League (QMJHL) draft picks.

This will be Grant's second time with the national U-18 team. He was a member of the gold-medal winning Canadian team at the Junior World Cup in Slovakia/Czech Republic in August, 2006. Sauvé has international experience as well, having represented Team Quebec at the 2006 World U-17 Hockey Challenge in Regina. He was also chosen to play for the QMJHL all-stars in this past November's Canada/Russia Challenge.

In addition to Grant and Sauvé, Sea Dogs defenceman David Stich will also be in Finland participating in the championship, the third time the Czech Republic native will be suiting up for his country in a world Under-18 event. He won a bronze medal at the IIHF World Championships in Sweden in April, 2006 and was a member of the Czech U-18 team at the Junior World Cup in August, 2006.

The local connection at the Under-18 Championship doesn't end with the three players. Sea Dogs athletic therapist Ettiene Fallu will be performing the same role for Team Canada.

"We are very excited to be so well represented at the championship," said Jacques Beaulieu, general manager and head coach of the Sea Dogs. "They will be among some of the best players in the land and in the world. This is not only good for them as players, but for the entire Sea Dogs organization. We are very proud of them. They deserve everything they're getting."

Team Canada flies to Europe tonight and will play two pre-competition games this Saturday (April 7) vs. Sweden and Monday (April 9) against Germany. Canada opens the championship Thursday (April 12) with a preliminary round contest with Germany.

TSN/RDS will be telecasting the World Under-18's. beginning with the Canada-Russia game on April 17. The event ends on April 22.
