Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Brandon, Manitoba - The Western Hockey League's Brandon Wheat Kings, in conjunction with Manitoba Blue Cross, are pleased to announce plans to recognize a long-time Corporate Community Partner during this Saturday's game against the visiting Saskatoon Blades at the Keystone Centre.
Simplot Canada recently sold its Brandon plant to Koch Fertilizer Canada Limited after operating in Brandon since the mid sixties and during that time it is believed that Simplot invested between eight and ten million dollars back into the community in various programs, ranging from Education and Community Projects to Major Sporting events and charities.
Education programs that it was involved in included such programs as Agriculture in the Classroom, Manitoba 4-H, Assiniboine Community College and Brandon University Scholarship Programs. Simplot was heavily involved in a number of Community Projects such as the Brandon Riverbank Discovery Centre, the Keystone Centre, Commonweath Air Training Museum, the Royal Manitoba Winter and Summer Fairs, Brandon Area Community Foundation and Simplot Millennium Park.
In addition to a number of charities, Simplot participated in major sporting events such as the World youth and Canadian Senior Baseball Championships, Provincial and International Hockey Tournaments, the 1982 Labatt Brier, the '89 Canadian Mixed, the '93 Scott Tournament of Hearts, the '95 Ford World Curling Championships, the 2002 Scott Tournament of Hearts as well as a valuable 40-year sponsor of the WHL's Wheat Kings.
This presentation of November's Manitoba Blue Cross Performer of the Month will be made before the start of the second period of Saturday's Western League game.
Manitoba Blue Cross is a not-for-profit organization. Since it was established in 1974, it has been dedicated to improving the well being and quality of life of Manitobans by offering essential services within the supplementary health care and travel benefit fields.
Saturday is the first of back to back home games this weekend. Sunday night, the Wheat Kings close out a busy 3-game in three night weekend against the visiting Prince Albert Raiders. Sunday night is also the first Rain Check Game of the 2006-07 season, meaning anyone can exchange unused tickets at the Keystone Centre box office for a "free" ticket to this game. Game time Sunday is 6 p.m.
The Wheat Kings will kick off the busy weekend with the first of a home and home series with the Blades Friday night in Saskatoon. Brandon enters the weekend with a record of 13-10-0-2, good for first place in the Eastern Division - one point up on the second place Swift Current Broncos.
Tickets to both games are on sale now at the Keystone Centre box office, by calling 726-3555 or online at ticketmaster.ca
In other related news, the Wheat Kings have announced that a record breaking total of just over $4,200 was raised for the Westman Chapter of the Kidney Foundation during Wednesday's Tip-a-Wheat King Day at Gullivers Grill. Ten members of the Wheat Kings including goalkeeper Tyler Plante, who earned the most tips of any player during the day, turned in their skates and sticks and waited on tables - during both the lunch and dinner hours. All tips received by the players were then matched by Gullivers and donated to the Kidney Foundation.
The other players that participated included Teegan Moore, Andrew Clark, Dustin Kohn, Theran Yeo, Codey Burki, Mark Derlago, Colby Robak, Keith Aulie and Ryan Reaves.
This year's totals were approximately $400 more than last year's event.
