'Dogs pound the Defenders, 9-4

Chris Durbin lead Portland's 14-hit attack, going 3-for-5, 2 RBI as the Sea Dogs pounded the Defenders, 9-4 on Thursday night at Hadlock Field. Portland had seven of their 14 hits with two-outs and beat James Garcia for the second time this season.

Frank Brooks (1-1) earned his first win in the Red Sox Organization, working five innings on three hits, two runs and three strikeouts.

Portland received multi-hit peformances by five players; Durbin, Jeremy West (2-for-5, 2 RB), Luis Jimenez (2-for-5, RBI), Dusty Brown (2-for-5) and Keoni De Renne (2-for-4).

Garcia allowed eight runs in five and 1/3 innings on nine hits and two strikeouts.

Jake Wald went 2-for-3 with a solo home run and 2 RBI for the Defenders, who had just five hits off Brooks, Randy Beam and Rusty Tucker.

Portland took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on back-to-back doubles by Durbin and West. Garcia uncorked a wild pitch with West a third base for the second run.

Connecticut cut the deficit to 3-2 heading into the sixth inning and scored three runs off Garcia. Jacoby Ellsbury finished 1-for-4 with a stolen base and a bases loaded walk in the sixth. Durbin followed with a two-run single to give Portland an 8-2 lead.

The Sea Dogs are 11-7 against Connecticut this season and can clinch the season series with a win tommorrow night.

Notes...Portland finished the game, 4-for-9 with runners-in-scoring position...Jon Searles worked a scoreless eighth inning...All nine starters for the Sea Dogs reached base safely - Alberto Concepcion was the lone player without a hit.
