Sea Dogs and Pirates to Host Ameriprise Celebrity Softball Challenge

Portland Sea Dogs News Release
Portland, Maine- The Portland Sea Dogs, Double-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, are teaming up with the Portland Pirates, AHL affiliate of the Anaheim Ducks, to present the Ameriprise Financial Celebrity Softball Challenge to benefit the Maine Children's Cancer Program. The event will take place on Tuesday, July 18th at 6:00 PM at Hadlock Field in Portland. The family event is free and open to the public.
The event which will include local celebrities and sports personalities is highlighted by the participation of former Boston Bruins' Rick Middleton and Bob Sweeney. The evening will include a live performance from the Don Campbell Band, a baseball demonstration by Mike Bordick, a home run derby, and the softball game. Other celebrities expected to participate include former UMaine Black Bear and current Vancouver Canuck Eric Weinrich, Portland Pirates defenseman Shane O'Brien, and former Maine Mariner and current Pirates assistant coach Bruce Crowder.

During the event there will be raffles and some lucky fans will win the chance to participate in the home run derby and the softball game.
The Maine Children's Cancer Program, located at the Maine Center for Cancer Care, offers outpatient consultation and treatment for children diagnosed with cancer. A staff of pediatric oncologists, pediatric nurses and specialists and social workers comprise the staff of the Maine Children's Cancer Program. The program participates in the national Children's Oncology Group (COG) Clinical Trials, and employs an on-site research team that manages the program's participation in the trials. Recently, the Maine Children's Cancer program has developed a pediatric peripheral stem cell transplant program in conjunction with the Barbara Bush Children's Hospital to service children in Maine who historically have had to travel to Boston to receive this type of treatment.
