Braves Clinch Southern Division's First-Half Pennant

Rome, GA - Tonight at State Mutual Stadium in front of 3,341 energized fans, the Rome Braves defeated the Columbus Catfish 9-4. The win clinched the South Atlantic League Southern Division's Championship for the first half of the season for the Braves.

Rome got things started in the first inning when Elvis Andrus reached first base on a fielding error. Eric Campbell then singled to left field moving Andrus to second. Isaiah Ka'aihue later singled up the middle, allowing Andrus to cross home plate, making the score 1-0. The Catfish answered the Braves' run the second inning when hometown boy Russ Mitchell singled through the hole at shortstop and later scored on a Shane Justis single to left, tying the score at 1-1. Rome scored their second run the bottom of the second inning when Cody Clark sent a blistering line drive double to left field. He advanced to third on a Derrick Arnold sacrifice bunt, and later sprinted home on an Ovandy Suero groundout giving the Braves the 2-1 lead. In the third, the Braves added two more runs when Eric Campbell doubled and later scored when Ka'aihue reached on a throwing error by Ivan DeJesus. Ka'aihue then scored when Maximiliano Ramirez sent him across home plate with a single to left giving Rome the 4-1 advantage. In the fifth, the Braves added an insurance run after Campbell reached on a base hit, stole second, advanced to third on a Ka'aihue groundout, and scored on a wild pitch by pitcher David Pfeiffer to make the score 5-1. The Catfish cut the Braves lead to 5-4 in the sixth when they scored three runs on four hits highlighted by a Juan Apodaca two run double. In the Braves half of the seventh, Andrus reached base on a fielding error, Campbell and Ramirez each walked and with the bases loaded, Clark smacked a double to left field scoring all three runners and giving the Braves a commanding 8-4 lead. In the eighth, Rome scored one last time when Quentin Davis singled to right, stole second, and jogged home on a Campbell shot thought the hole at second base. Braves win the game 9-4.

Rome pitcher Beau Jones (3-2) picked up the critical win for the Braves while reliever Nick Tisone (1) earned the save. David Pfeiffer (1-1) was the loser for the Catfish. This is the first trip to the playoffs for the Braves since 2003. Rome won the South Atlantic League Championship that season.
