Brandon, Manitoba -- The Western Hockey League's Brandon Wheat Kings, in conjunction with Manitoba Blue Cross are pleased to announce plans to honour a long-time Brandon coach, who was recently recognized at the national level for her efforts with Special Olympic athletes.

Joyce Wityshyn of Brandon was named the 2005 female coach of the year last month by Special Olympics Canada. In addition to receiving her national award later this month in Toronto, she has been named November's recipient of the Manitoba Blue Cross Performer of the Month, which is presented throughout the year to local athletes, coaches, volunteers or event organizers that have made an impact on sport throughout western Manitoba.

Wityshyn has served as a coach at the 1990, '92, '96, 2000 and 2004 Special Olympic Games. She was also the national team coach for the Canadian Association for Athletes with an Intellectual Disability from 1993 to 1997.

Her international highlights also include trips to the '94 and '98 Paralympic Winter Games in Norway and Japan as a coach, as well as 2001 and 2005 World Games in Alaska and Japan.

A current member of the organizing committee for the 2006 Special Olympic Canada Summer Games to be held in Brandon next July, Joyce has played a key role over the years in developing Nordic skiing in Manitoba.

"We're excited to be part of this program again this year," says Manitoba Blue Cross Vice President of Sales and Marketing Ken Hildahl. "The efforts of people like Joyce make our communities better places to live."

Manitoba Blue Cross is Proud Sponsor of the Wheat Kings and Western Hockey League.

The presentation will be held during the first intermission of this Friday's WHL game at the Keystone Centre between the Wheat Kings and visiting Vancouver Giants.

Tickets to Friday's game against the Giants, as well as Saturday's vs. Prince Albert are on sale now at the Keystone box office, by calling 726-3555 or on line at ticketmaster.ca
