Baltimore Blast News Release
New-Look Blast:
The Blast entered the 2005-06 MISL with a host of new players and a new 30-game schedule. Tim Wittman and Max Thompson will lead a squad that includes veterans Danny Kelly, Lee Tschantret, Denison Cabral and David Bascome. Baltimore natives P.J. Wakefield, Billy Nelson and Giuliano Celenza also are back for the 2005-06 campaign. In addition to the returners, the team will field several new acquisitions, including Adauto Neto, Robbie Aristodemo, Sanaldo and Jonathan Steele, all of whom were picked in the recent Cleveland/Kansas City Dispersal Draft.
Newcomer Neto Named MISL Offensive Player of the Week:
Blast forward Adauto Neto was named MISL Offensive Player of the Week after his five-point performance in Baltimore's 9-4 win over the California Cougars Friday night. Neto scored back-to-back goals in the second quarter to record the first goals of his Blast career. He completed his hat trick midway through the third quarter and added two assists on the night. Prior to being chosen by the Blast in the recent MISL Dispersal Draft, Neto led the Cleveland Force to the MISL Championship last season. Dating back to the 2004-05 season, Neto has recorded at least one goal in eight consecutive regular-season games. Despite an injury that kept him out of several games last year, he recorded 21 goals and 31 points in 25 games for the Force.
Selling Out:
The Blast hosted a crowd of 11,519 Friday night when the team defeated the California Cougars, 9-4. The game marked the first time since March 24, 1990 that the Blast sold out the Arena (in that game the original Blast defeated the visiting Tacoma Stars, 6-0.
Season Openers:
With the 9-4 win over the Cougars last Friday night (11/11), the Blast is 10-4 in opening-night games since the 1992-93 NPSL season. The Blast lost 5-3 to the San Diego Sockers to start the 2004-05 season and 5-3 to the KiXX to start the 2003-04 season. Baltimore's two other season-opening losses came in Philadelphia (21-19 in overtime) to start the 1997-1998 season and at home against Harrisburg, 19-18, to start the 1998-99 season. The 2004-05 season marked just the third time the team has opened the season on the road in the franchise's 14 years of play (since the team joined the NPSL for the 1992-93 season). Baltimore is 1-2 in opening games on the road with a 13-11 win in Milwaukee to start the 1992-93 season, the 21-19 loss to Philadelphia in 1997 and the 2004-05 5-3 loss in San Diego.
Back in Action:
After an injury-plagued 2004-05 season, the Blast was back at full strength to open the season Friday night. The team took the field with Denison Cabral, Carlos Garcia and Machel Millwood in uniform, unlike last year when all three missed most of the year due to season-ending injuries. Cabral and Garcia retuned to the playing field after almost a full year (364 days) of not participating in a game. Both players left the November 12th game against the Wave last year with knee injuries and underwent surgery later in the season. Millwood played his last game in February and underwent sports hernia surgery in March.
Cabral recorded one goal and one assist in his comeback and Garcia scored one goal.
Baltimore vs. St. Louis:
Since St. Louis joined the MISL for the 2003-04 season, the Blast has posted a 7-2 record against the Steamers. The Blast swept the Steamers in four games during the 2003-04 season and went 3-2 against St. Louis last year. Saturday night will be the Steamers' first game of the 2005-06 season.
