Lubbock Cotton Kings News Release

Amarillo, Tx - Amarillo's Derek Hahn contributed a pair of goals and an assist to delight 4,438 fans inside the Cal Farley Coliseum and lead the Gorillas past the Lubbock Cotton Kings 3-1 Saturday night.

Entering the contest, the Amarillo Gorillas had only had a lead this season for a span of 1:25 (one-minute and 25-seconds), but they scored the first goal of the contest tonight. With 6:29 remaining in the opening period, Keith Rowe redirected a Derek Hahn slap shot past Kings goaltender Lance Leslie while on the power play to take a 1-0 lead through the first period of play.

Derek Hahn single-handedly extended the Gorillas lead to 3-0 with a pair of goals in the second period of play. His first of the period came 7:59 into the frame, as he redirected a Kevin Wilson wrist shot while screening Leslie. The second of Hahn's goals came on the power play with 3:25 remaining in the period. He received a pass from Brent Hughes while unattended and slung a wrist shot past the glove of Leslie and into the top shelf.

Lubbock picked up their only tally of the evening by the stick of rookie Vic Pereira. While on the power play, Bobby Brown launched a slap shot from the left side that tipped off Pereira's stick and beat the stick-side of Shawn Degagne, preventing Degagne from registering the shutout. For Pereira, it was his first professional goal and could have been his second of the night. Pereira scored early in the opening period, but the goal was disallowed for having too many players on the ice.

The loss extends the Cotton Kings current winless streak to three games and drops their record to 2-5-0 on the young season. Amarillo out-shot the Cotton Kings 31-27 and it was their first win when out-shooting an opponent (both teams entered the contest winless when out-shooting the opposition). Lubbock, who has played five of six games on the road, finally returns home to the Lubbock Municipal Coliseum Sunday to host the Austin Ice Bats at 5:05 PM.
