Colorado Eagles News Release
WINDSOR, CO- The Central Hockey League Champion Colorado Eagles announced the acquisition of defenseman Les Borsheim and center Ed McGrane on this, the first day of training camp. Borsheim has been assigned to the Colorado Eagles by the Omaha Ak-sar-ben Knights of the American Hockey League (AHL), the top affiliate of the Calgary Flames, and McGrane assigned by the Iowa Stars of the AHL, the top affiliate of the Dallas Stars. The signing of these two players gives the Eagles 25 players for training camp.
Borsheim is a 6-2, 195-pound native of Watrous, Saskatchewan and played last season in the United Hockey league for the Quad City Mallards. In Quad City, he had a solid season finishing second on the Mallards in penalty minutes with 252, including a career high in goals (3). In 58 games, Borsheim had seven points, and played in an additional three playoff games.
During the 2003-04 season, he started the campaign in Oklahoma City, with the Blazers and tallied a goal before being called up to the American Hockey League with the Philadelphia Phantoms. In his first season in Oklahoma, Borsheim had a career high in assists (8), points (9), and games played (62). In that same season, he led the Blazers with 250 penalty minutes. Prior to playing professionally, he spent four seasons in the Western League where he appeared in 167 games and totaled 43 points. Borsheim gives the Eagles two players under contract for the upcoming season that exceeded 200 penalty minutes last season.
"I have seen Les play when he was with Oklahoma City and also in the WHL in Canada. Once he didn't make Omaha's team, he called us up and wanted to play here," exclaimed Eagles Head Coach Chris Stewart.
McGrane has been assigned to the Eagles by the Iowa Stars of the AHL, the top affiliate of the Dallas Stars. He is a 5-11, 195 pound center that has played most of the last two seasons in the East Coast Hockey League. He led the Wheeling Nailers in scoring last season with 63 points including 27 goals in 71 games. McGrane set career highs in all major statistical categories with Wheeling in 2004-05.
Prior to last season, McGrane played with the ECHL's Louisiana IceGators in 2003-04, and the season before that, he played in the CHL with the Corpus Christi Rayz for 19 games. Before turning pro, McGrane played at the University of Massachusetts-Lowell and is the River Hawks all-time leading goal scorer with 70 goals.
"I have had discussions with Ed over the last two seasons and when things didn't work out in Iowa, we were the first team that he called," said Chris Stewart.
