Tulsa Oilers News Release
With all 25 players expected, the Tulsa Oilers went through a rigorous first day of training camp, with an emphasis on conditioning and education.
During part of the first day, players skated wearing weighted vests, coach Butch Kaebel says helps develop conditioning, specifically tailored toward hockey. He said he had never had a team use them before. "It something that I know a lot of European teams use and I think it can help our team," Kaebel said.
He also spent some time on the first day working on the Oilers, special teams, something he's never done on the first day of a training camp. "The league sent us a video explaining the new rules and a lot of the emphasis on the hooking, holding, and interference calls. There could be a lot of penalties called early in the season, while guys are adjusting," Kaebel said. "It'll make the game better for the fans, and it'll make the power plays and penalty killing even that much more important."
The Oilers will hit the ice again on Tuesday at 9 a.m. at the Tulsa Convention Center. Kaebel expects the team to work out until approximately noon. All of the Oilers training camp sessions are free and open to the public.
There will be two exhibition games this season for the Oilers, both against the Oklahoma City Blazers. The Oilers travel to the Blazers Ice Center on Thursday October 13th for a 7:30 p.m. contest. They will host the Blazers at the Oilers Ice Center, located at 64th and Mingo on Saturday the 15th at 7 p.m.
Regular season action for the Oilers gets underway on Friday October 21st when they host the expansion Youngstown SteelHounds at 7:35 p.m. Oilers season ticket and individual game ticket information is available by calling the Oilers office at (918) 632-7825.
