August 18, 2005 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Fresno Grizzlies News Release
Fresno, CA-Doug DeVore hit two home runs and Matt Cain struck out nine batters as the Fresno Grizzlies defeated the Colorado Springs Sky Sox 7-4 in front of 7,035 fans Thursday night at Grizzlies Stadium. With the win, the Grizzlies tied a season high winning streak with their fifth consecutive victory. Fresno moved into sole possession of second place in the PCL Pacific Conference Southern Division when Tucson lost to Sacramento tonight 7-6.
DeVore put the Grizzlies up 2-0 in the bottom of the first inning with a two-run shot over the center field wall, his eighth of the season. With the Grizzlies trailing 4-2 entering the bottom of the fourth inning, DeVore drilled his second homer of the night, a solo shot off of the light tower in right field, to cut the deficit to 4-3.
Fresno erased the deficit all together when they erupted for four runs in the bottom of the fifth, capped off by a two out, two-run triple off the bat of 1B Tony Torcato, giving the Grizzlies a 7-4 lead that they would not relinquish.
The multi-homer game was DeVore's second in the last two weeks and his third since joining the Grizzlies on June 3. 2B Kevin Frandsen had his third multi-hit game in a row with a 2-4 night at the plate. Cain settled down after a rough second and third inning to win his tenth game of the season and now has a league leading 169 strikeouts on the year. LHP Jack Taschner struck out the side in the ninth to pick up his team leading tenth save.
Fresno will wrap up the homestand tomorrow against Colorado Springs at 7:05 P.M. at Grizzlies Stadium. The first 2,500 fans in attendance will receive a Matt Cain Bobblehead, presented by Acapulco Restaurant and Cantina. RHP Matt Kinney (5-7) will try to complete the four-game sweep for the Grizzlies, as he takes on LHP Justin Hampson (4-12) and the Sky Sox.
