Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release

Streak Over

Lastings Milledge went 4 for 5 with two doubles and a run scored in his second game with the Binghamton Mets, helping them to a 6-4 victory over the Reading Phillies last night at NYSEG Stadium. The win snapped a five-game losing streak for the B-Mets, who also got a 4-for-4, two-RBI night from Brett Harper. Ken Chenard allowed three runs over 5 1/3 innings for the win.

A Cool July

Last night, the B-Mets drummed out 13 hits en route to scoring seven runs. Coming into the game, Binghamton was hitting just .203 in July and .168 during their five-game losing streak, scoring seven runs over those five contests. The 13 hits last night was three shy of the 16 hits Binghamton managed in its previous three games combined.

‘Pen Men

Last night, after Rafael Lopez pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings in relief of Chenard, Jeremy Hill allowed a run in two innings, but was still able to pick up his first save of the year. The run allowed by Hill is just the second earned run the bullpen has given up over Binghamton's last five games, spanning 16 innings (1.13 ERA). The B-Mets now have 19 saves in 25 opportunities, but just eight from the bullpen's current members.

Back On Track

After losing on the last two NYSEG Stadium Fireworks Nights, the B-Mets picked up the win last night, improving to 7-4 on Fireworks Nights at home, beginning the season 5-1 in such contests.

Why Travel?

Since June 24th, the B-Mets have gone 7-12. However, all seven of those wins have come at home, where the B-Mets haven't lost a series since June 10th-12th vs. Norwich. Meanwhile, Binghamton's lost its last eight road games, dropping to 15-26 away from home.

On The Mound

RHP Yusmeiro Petit (3-2, 2.97) Last Time Out: 7/6 vs. NH, G1 (W): 7 IP, 2 R, 5 H, BB, 10 K (W 4-2)...Yusmeiro allowed a two-run homer to Ron Davenport in the second, but retired 14 of the next 16 to face him, finishing with his second career complete game, the other coming while he was with High-A St. Lucie in 2004. Davenport's homer was the only extra-base hit off Yusmeiro, who reached double figures in strikeouts for the first time this season.

This Season: Today, Yusmeiro's making his 15th start and first in 10 days. He last pitched July 10th in the Futures Game at Comerica Park, hurling a scoreless third inning for the victorious World team. He was also a member of the Northern Division squad that competed in the EL All-Star Game Wednesday at Portland, but he didn't play. No longer restrained by a low pitch count, Yusmeiro's gone at least six innings in five of his last six starts, going 3-0 with a 2.29 ERA, striking out 43 and walking six during that stretch. The righthander's struggled against lefthanded hitters (.311, 8 HR), but has been effective against righties (.177, HR). Against Reading: This is Yusmeiro's first career appearance against the Phillies.

Background: The Maracaibo, Venezuela native is in his fourth season in the Mets organization after signing as a non-drafted free agent in November 2001. Last season, the righthander was 12-6 with a 2.20 ERA in 26 regular-season starts between Low-A Capital City, High-A St. Lucie and Binghamton, earning him recognition as the top pitching prospect in the Mets organization from Baseball America.
