PCL1 Round Rock Express

Express Drop Second Straight to Iowa

May 28, 2005 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Round Rock Express News Release

(ROUND ROCK, TX) – Twenty-seven year old Cuban native and Iowa lefty Raul Valdez knows what a battle is. It took him six tries to finally defect to the U.S. from Cuba. And he took the fight to Round Rock hitters in the first inning after loading the bases with nobody out. With the bases loaded, Valdez retired 3B Mike Coolbaugh, LF Luke Scott and 1B Royce Huffman in order to end what could have been a promising inning.

Valdez went six and a third shutout innings, surrendering six hits, while striking out seven and walking only one. Right-hander Chris Fussell took the loss for the Express.

The Cubs got on the scoreboard first in the second inning on a two-run single by CF Trenidad Hubbard. They got solo runs in the fifth and sixth innings to pad the lead to 4-0. Then, after reliever Travis Driskill struck out the side in the sixth, he got into trouble with the bases loaded. A fielder's choice scored a run, two scored on a ball that glanced off the right-hander's glove, and when the smoke cleared, four more runs had scored to make it an 8-0 game and that's the way it ended.

Round Rock had several chances to score, leaving ten runners on for the night, with eight of those left in scoring position.

On Sunday, Iowa and Round Rock meet in game three of the series. Right-hander Taylor Buchholz goes for the E-Train. No pitcher has been posted yet for the I-CUBS. Game time is set for 2:05 PM.
