Winnipeg Blue Bombers News Release

Winnipeg, MB– Winnipeg Blue Bombers head coach Jim Daley today named Urban Bowman special teams coach.

Bowman is an experienced CFL coach with a strong history with the Big Blue. He first started coaching in 1961 and first came to the CFL in 1971 as an assistant coach with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

"I have known Urban for 18 years," Daley said. "I have seen his work on special teams, have coached against him on special teams and have been very impressed with his work. I'm very happy to add a veteran special teams coach to our staff, as it will allow us to expedite our development as a football club."

Bowman is in his fourth term with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. From 1985-1988, Bowman was the defensive line and special teams coach. He served in the same roles with Winnipeg from 1991-1993.

In 1992 Bowman was the Blue Bombers interim head coach, filling in for Cal Murphy during his absence for heart transplant surgery. Bowman made the most of the opportunity, leading the Big Blue to an 11-7 record, a 1st place finish and the East Division Championship. He led the team to a Grey Cup appearance – its third in four years.

He came back to the Blue & Gold as a defensive assistant coach, Oct. 14, 2003. Bowman is a graduate of the University of Delaware and of Colorado State University, where he earned a Masters degree in education.
