Wild Things to honor Stogies

The Washington Wild Things will pay tribute to the Wheeling Stogies who played minor league ball in Wheeling West Virginia in 1934. Wheeling housed professional baseball from 1887 through 1934. Art Rooney Sr. was a member of the Wheeling Stogie Team.

Tonight the Wild Things will wear throw back Stogie Uniforms when they take on the Chillicothe Paints. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at Falconi Field.

It is indeed doubtful if a more colorful brother duo than the Pittsburgh Rooney brothers, Art and Dan, have ever performed in minor league baseball. For sheer color – The Rooney brothers had it all over the rest of the field. Art was a slashing outfielder and Brother Dan was a catcher on the same team. Art held several records during the 1925 season: appeared in the most games – 106; scored the most runs – 109; most hits – 143 and has the most stolen bases – 58. Art's batting average .369 was just three points shy of the league record. Brother Dan finished third in the league with a healthy .359 mark and set the high doubles mark with 35. Outstanding competitors... the slashing – scrapping Rooney brothers ...asked no quarter and gave none in return.
